I had a message on my voice mail last week. Seems some guy from Port Chester NY had found a wooden piece off a boat which had a label with my name on it. ??? Now this is interesting as I live 90 miles up the Hudson River and Port Chester is on Long Island Sound,

I call the guy up, and not being nautical he says it is "the piece which you guys move back and forth on the back of the boat".
OK I guess it is a tiller handle. But I have my tiller on my Capri 427. And even if it fell off, no way it could get to Port Chester. Being totally confused I ask the guy to hold on to it for a few days while figure out how this could happen.

Ah ha ! I sold my Capri 297 to a yacht club a few miles from Port Chester. So I call them up and ask if they are missing any pieces from the boat I sold them. This club rents out Capri 22 to their members. Well a member somehow put 297 "on the rocks". When they recovered the boat ( minimal damage) the tiller and rudder were missing. The good Samaritan had found BOTH.

The club has since recovered the tiller and rudder. Saved them $$$

Moral of the story. Label anything of value that can fall off your boat.

Who labels their tillers and rudders? I obviously did. Until last year when I retired I had a small business. And I used to sell bar code printers, software, scanners and consumables ( blank labels & supplies).

I also used to print labels. So almost anything that could use a label, got a label. Fenders, spinnaker pole, ,,,,,, These particular labels were a polyester material and could withstand the elements.

I'll add that ptouch labels last forever too... I use them to label sail controls for newbs crewing for me... so when I say "blow the spinnaker halyard" they can read the label

We used Ptouch labels on our horses bowls made of high density rubber (in water, mud, and such lots), and they are still on 2 years later.

Hersh I don't label everything as much as you, but I've got my share of labels on my boat, so really its not just you.
