Loss of suction sucks

Peggy - We have your book and have followed rather closely. The boat is in an area of tons of marine growth. We pumpout the tank with every use (not daily - end of trip/weekend or when full on extended cruises), hose/rinse the vent, use the KO and CP faithfully. We even flush the hose that runs from the thru-valve to the toilet once a month with fresh water and a little KO. There is NO odor except that "swamp smell" after being gone for a week. That lasts just 1 or 2 flushes, then gone. It does not permeate the boat. Hoses don't smell either. We do get that when the diesel starts too after being gone. That seems to be common with our creek. Everything has been great - except the last two weekends we seem to lose suction when pumping in order to flush. We have to pump a great deal - sometimes we get it back, sometimes not. Could critters be blocking anything? How can we fix it? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Smell

If you can flush with fresh water that usually takes care of the swamp smell(dead plants and critters). Loss of suction is mechanical, do a maintenance check, most likely bad intake valve.

KL, I believe Peggie asked a question that has not yet been answered. I suggest you take a spin through the archives and see for yourself what Peggie has contributed here.

I don't even have a permanent head on my boat and Peggy's help and information has helped me more than probably any other poster on this board for years now. Thanks Peggy!

Let's try it again, Sandi...

I need to know the make/model/age of your toilet in order to make at least a semi-educated guess as to why it's not bringing in any flush water. (Thanks, guys...see you tomorrow, Phil!)

Sorry Peggy

I have been working and checking the site wasn't a priority. We have a Jabsco manual head on 2005 Hunter 36. The pump was fixed/replaced in May as it spitting out water. It just started this little feature of not flushing water thru. As for the exact model I can't tell you until I go back to the boat on the weekend. I put a call into the dealer on Monday anyway and haven't heard back yet - at least no message. Thanks.

Jabsco manual tells me enough...

No apology needed...I was afraid my question had gotten buried under the other posts to your question. I thought the problem might be a failed flapper valve in the pump, but unless you've used a household chemical bowl cleaner or something else you shouldn't have, that's unlikely. Otoh, if the pump has been opened up to be "worked on," it could have been put back incorrectly. Two possibilities: 1) you've sucked up something that's blocking the intake line. If you have, the first thing you'd notice is an odor that knocks you off your feet with the first flush when you first come aboard after the boat has sat in the summer heat. 2) The wet/dry valve has failed...a VERY common problem in Jabsco toilets built in the last 5-7 years. The "valve" is actually just a flimsy little "gate" (cam on the drawing) that the lever swings to block or unblock the flow of flush water. Due to either a tooling or a production flaw, the d'd thing hangs--almost always in the dry mode. The fix: a replacement wet/dry valve assembly...or better yet, a better toilet that doesn't have this problem and the others you've experienced. My choice: a Raritan PH II. And others who've installed it will back up my opinion. It's been the top rated manual toilet under $500 for several decades.
