I have an Edson Pedestal. Today the wire came off after steering hard to one side. I've tried to put it back in back, but there isn't enough slack. How can I losen it in order to put it back in and then tighten it again? I've checked Edson's website and they say that we should pay attention to the tension, but they do not mention anywhere how to adjust the tension.

Look On The Rudder Quadrant

There should be turnbuckles on the ends of the cables if your is like the ones i have serviced. Rick D.

While you are there

You may or may not be getting into an "upside down in a phone booth" situation. That can't be helped. While you are there don't for get to oil the cables and sheves as per the Edson manual. Kill two birds with one stone.

Have a look at the ends

Whoa, don't cut anything until you understand how it works. Check the ends of the cable. That's where the adjustment should be. If it is not there you have a very unusual configuration.

Don't cut it -

There aren't any turnbuckls on my old 27,(at least I didn't see any) but it may be the adjustment comes the baseplate under the cockpit - there are curved slots that the pully bracket fits into. I suppose if you move them outboard the cable would tighten. Just happened to be trying to replace my shifting cable last night which seems to require just about disassembing the whole f-- thing, esp. after dropping parts to the bottom of it.

Kostas: Maybe We Should Know The Boat...

...make, model, year and length. Perhaps we can get some better answers. RD

Rudder Quadrant

Most often the adjustment is at the threaded end of the cables where they attach to the rudder quadrant. You may need to open up an accessport above the rudder shaft, or you may have a removeable headliner at the aft end of the quarterberth, or you may be able to see the situation from the inside of a sail locker if it connects back to the stern near the centerline of the boat-- a model & year would be helpfull.

I was able to put it back after taking apart the whole pedestal. The ends are attached to the rudder quadrant and they are not screwed on but much more like clamped with a typed of seal similar to those they use to lock containers. I am afraid that it will come off again, I ordered a new cable from Edson just in case.
