Im headed down for a nite on the hook this weekend to the Los Coronados. I've never anchored there. Any suggestions? Areas of concern? I under stand the best anchorage is about half way down the largest island on the east side. Also is there much to explore with the dinghy down there? I know we cant go onshore, but maybe some snorkeling? Thanks, Bob

Go early enough

so that you can return to the bay if you need to. You are right that the majority of people anchor in the area about half way down the east side of the south lsland. However, the anchorage is basically an open roadstead (sp?). If a swell is from the north or the wind is too far north it gets pretty rolly, and you may want to go somewhere else. But, do go it's an interesting trip. The last time we stayed down there, we were boarded by a young sea lion while we were eating. He landed on the cabin house clearing the life lines to get on board. We had to entice him off with a piece of steak, then he tried coming up the swim step. Our dog was quite excited about it. As far as the dingy and exploring, I think you can see most of what is there from the big boat. But, there is some diving out there so you might be able to do some snorkling (it's way too cold for me). Go, have a good time, we did Mariners Cove over the holiday and had a good time. dwain s/v Dancy h 340

That is a nice little spot to anchor. Winds lately have been west or sw so should be good. I have not been there for a while, but plan on heading down there with my own boat this summer. Sea lions are not the only boarding going on there, make sure your papers are in order, the Mexican Navy has been know to visit. CG is also stopping lots of boats coming back into SD bay. Check the links. Not so simple as it used to be. Have a great trip. http://www.bajabound.com/before/permits/fishing.asp
