I spoke to Gene Suess today regarding Lorna Doone and he says that a
Mr. Frank McKay owns her and keeps her in Pender Harbour. Frank, if you
are tuned in to this conversation, give me a shout off line at
bhofler@...

Cheers

Hi,
I'm looking for American Vega newsletters that Sid Rosen published with
any information covering Vega #1517 Lorna Doone's circumnavigation.

Thanks!

Peter.

Thanks Richard,

Peter, The AVA CD has the original account of Lorna Doone's voyage by Tony Skidmore along with the serialized version published in "Fair Winds" in the newsletter archive. There are also many photos of Lorna at the Rendezvous.

I'm flying to Maui in a few minutes but I'll be back this afternoon. email me at crose (at) cyclecityltd (dot) com.

Aloha,

Chuck

Hello all; for anyone interested, Lorna Doone's for sail again; no idea
why. Check "Vela Yacht Sales" website for info. Jim Allen, O/O of
Vela in Victoria, B.C., sold her the last time and is very familiar
with the boat, previous owners, etc., etc. Geoff V2947

Peter,

Tony Skidmore's own account, as he sent it to me, is on the AVA Web
site at Long and Short Voyages of Vega 27 sailboats and others

Its in three parts down at the bottom of the page.

This same account was published in the AVA Newsletter in edited form
and, as Steve has mentioned, on the VAGB web site as well. If Sid
published an earlier account it would have been different than the one
I have but since I have most of Sids Newsletter now in .pdf we could
probably find it given enough time. Some of the old NLs are in the
archive on the web site. I haven't had a chance to dig up the CD and
post the rest as yet but I will get on it as soon as we get settled in
Friday Harbor.

Aloha ka kou,

Chuck

No problem, Chuck. I've read the accounts and gleaned much useful
information about the gear Tony used with success: Anderson ST
winches, Navik self steering, etc.

I found it interesting that Tony lived only a few miles from me and
kept his boat at the same marina where 'Sin Tacha is now, but over a
decade ago, and before my sailing bug re-bit.

One of the factors that settled me on purchasing my Vega was his
statement that: "...Some boats do not take kindly to ocean voyaging
and are dragged kicking and screaming around the world; every passage
a nightmare of gear failures and defective systems. In port they sulk
and drag their anchors. Not so the Vega! "Lorna Doone" entered fully
into the spirit of the voyage and seemed to enjoy it every bit as
much as I did."

Pretty hard to get a better recommendation!
