Loran and Navdata Repeater

My recently purchased boat came equipped with a Loran and Navdata repeater. I am using a handheld GPS when necessary but wouldn't mind having a backup. Does anyone use Loran anymore? The system seems to be needing to be initialized. Does anyone have experience with this? If the Loran is no good can the repeater be used for any other purpose?

pull it out.....

When we bought our boat 2 years ago the previous owner had a Loran system installed. Due to Lorans sketchy service area and big antenna we pulled the whole system out. Something i wouldn't rely on by any means. Stick to your handheld GPS but dont forget your parallel rule, compass and chart.

If it Works Keep It

I would not invest much to get it operational. Find somone to help you figure out how to work it. Loran is still up (for now) and works well.
