Thanks for all the comments and advice, etc. The other problem I incountered on my newly purchased Hunter 26.5 the day I leaned her over, was she would drop 1.5 knots of speed from a starboard tack to port tack. This was repeatable, and consistent, so I can rule out changes in wind, etc. Trim was as symetrical as I could make it, engine out of water, etc. Bent rudder??? Any other thoughts?? Anyone else had this problem?? Thanks, Chaos

Check the Archives

There are some very good past threads (discussions) on this topic. Possible explanations: Your speedo is set up so that it reads differently on each tack. Placement too close to the keel, or to far around the curve of the hull may cause this. A good check is to use the speed on a GPS, especially if currents are minimal. Your standing rigging is off center. The quick check is to measure from your fully extended main halyard to the rail at the same spot on both sides of the boat. The measurement should be the same. Loose stays could also cause the problem. If the speed difference comes from a GPS, not a speedo, then the cause could be currents setting you differently on different tacks. You'll find more in the archives. David Lady Lillie

Other problem

David, Thanks for input. I talked to Rooke Sails and discussed rigging. Also, possible deformed wing of keel has caused similar problems (if it is lead). Good point on the location of the speedo sensor. That did not come up in discussion. Thanks Chaos

Mr.

Actually, I have a UK Hunter, but I was facing the same problem, different readings on different tacks. First we thought it was the sail trim, then we blamed it on the rig. But with a new rig and still a different reading it was time to check the speedo wheel. Voila... It was not center to the boat! The water must be flowing differently from side to side in front of the keel. So our current explanation is this: Wrong position of the wheel.

BINGO!!!

You've got it exactly. If the log is not on centerline, no matter where in the hull, the water will flow at different rates dependent on the tack. I removed the log from mine and relocated it on center and 18" forward of the keel. This is the optimal location. No more incansistancy.
