New boat owner needs to loosen a side stay in order to straighten out a spreader. The fitting on deck has a top and bottom threaded bolt with a threaded cylinder between them and both top and bottom springs. I simply can't recall how this fitting loosens and tightens..help! thanks in advance..dave

Dave, You should get someone to help you with this. Based on your use of terminology, you probably don't know enough yet to mess with the rigging. 1. "side stay" = shroud 2. bolts with cylinder = turnbuckle. 3. "top and bottom springs?"

You don't really need professional help, you just need an education. First, are you sure your spreaders needs to be straightened? They aren't supposed to be exactly horizontal, but should bisect the angle that the shroud makes between the masthead and the deck. Second, I suggest you get a couple of basic sailing books and a West Marine catalog. Read the sailing books and look at all of the Sailing Hardware products in the catalog. They'll really help you with terminology and and give you a better idea on how everything works and fits together. Don't get discouraged! We were all clueless in the beginning!

Sorry but I agree with the others. Get someone who knows what they're doing to help you with this. A professional rigger would be ideal but a good sailor who knows how to tune a rig would work too. I'd be concerned if your spreader needs "straightening". LaDonna
