Hi Guys , I have a 1985 Beneteau Idylle 10.5. I have found there is some play in the rudder bushing that's not to bad yet but now I'm detecting some movement inside the rudder it self.
The Idylle's rudder post is very substantial considering the boat was designed to stand on it's keel, rudder and two out riggers fastened too stainless steel plates which are mounted on the gunnel's amid ship. If the rudder was designed to carry some of the weight of the boat you would think is should be solid.
So the question is, can you expect some play between the fiberglass rudder and it's post?

I recently purchased an 1985 Idylle 10.5 and during the survey the rudder post appeared to have no play in it all all. It seemed rock solid.

Now my cutlass bearing on the other hand had play in it, probably 1/32" or so, and will need to be replaced. The surveyor seemed to think I will have to drop the rudder in order to remove the prop shaft and the cutlss bearing. This will happen in the next few weeks, so I'll try and re-measure the play in the rudder.

I've discovered this is a fairly common problem in the north where we pull our boats out of the water for the winter months. If water leaks into the rudder between the stainless post and the fiberglass skin it is trapped there. In the winter months while the boat is on the hard the water freezes and expands pushing the rudder apart from the inside out. This explains why there was no apparent damage in the fall, it was water logged and a I didn't know it.
Thanks for the input. It's good to know another Idylle 10.5 owner out there. We love ours. Good luck with your cutlass.
