The forward cleat on the port side gets loose every year, I have fashioned a wrench on a 24" extention in order to reach the backing nut, but I cannot never get it tight enough. Anyone have the same problem, and if so how have you reached the nuts to get them tighter? There is a access plate in the anchor locker, but it seems to only give access to the nuts under the pulpit. Any ideas?

Have you checked to see if

there are lock nuts underneath the nuts? Could you replace the standard nuts with nylocks? Stu

Cannot get my hand anywhere near the nuts

Stu, The problem is lack of access to the nuts. I have a 7/16" wrench attached to a 20" piece of Stainless Steel Tubing and this just allows me to get a portion of the wrench on the nut. I would like to put some nylock nuts on, but I can't figure out how to reach in there. I hope some ingenious Catalina Sailor has fashioned some kind of tool so that they can reach the nuts.

Loose Cleat

If there is a tool to get to the nuts, I couldn't find it. I added another access plate, just like the one at the forward end of the locker.

Another access opening

Bill We have the same issue on our C34s. There's only one bow cleat that was originally installed by the factory (on the Mark I boats), on centerline aft of the forestay. Many of us have installed additional cleats port and starboard. There is only one existing factory installed Beckson circular access panel. So, we've added additional Becksons to give us access. I was able to reach under from the existing Beckson to add my own new portside cleat, haven't yet put a new one on starboard, so we still use the original centerline cleat for starboard. See the link for the complete project. Stu
