Loose bow cleat on a H23.5

When I tied up to the dock last week I noticed my bow cleat was a little loose, so I got a phillips screwdriver and found one of the screws would just spin. Then I went below and removed the front panel and reached my hand up to find the nuts to tighten, and there wasn't any. I believe this means that the screws were screwed into a plate glassed into the bottom of the deck. If this is the case, could I just add a nut and tighten down the cleat? Thoughts?? Thanks, Jack

Usually the material of the screws is softer than

the plate. Find new screws of an adequate size and use them adding "locktite". You do not mention any water leak so perhaps using a sealer is not necessary. If no adequate screw is find and you need to drill through to add a locknut make sure to use some sealer.

That's the Fact Jack

Always wanted to use that one. Tighten the screw as tight as you dare then add a fender washer, lock washer and nut to the underside. Probably a good time to rebed everything while your at it.

Thanks Benny, Rick

Didn't think about the screw, but I'll check and see if the screw may be stripped, and didn't think about rebeding duh!! thats a no-brainer. Must have left my brain on the dock. If the plate is stripped then I guess a SS fender washer and locknut is the right way to go. Thanks guys.

Let us know the solution

Let us know the solution. i have a loose bow cleat on my 23.5 and the screws that hold it to the deck will not turn (seem frozen) is there a way to access the underside of the deck to add a lock washer and a nut ?

I'm going to the boat on Sunday

And will try to put a nut on the screw. I pulled off the front panel in front of the V berth, had to remove the foam, then you can reach up and feel the two screws sticking through from the cleat. Easy to put nuts on them, but they should tighten without nuts since there is a plate in the glass. I post back what I find. Jack

That did the trick..

Added a SS flat washer and locknut to the front screw and tightened it down. I need to rebed all the hardware this summer, so this works for now.
