Hello everyone, making my to do list before splashing in
My winches haven’t been serviced since???
I want to get the parts before doing anything, but I cannot identify the make or model of them, all I can see is that they are 2 speed
Here are pictures of the winches in question

My Pearson has Lewmar winches, but they don't look like your photos.
Yeah, the writing I see looks like Lewmar writing, but I don't recognize that black top ring.

They are Lewmar 30s.

but I don't recognize that black top ring.
Probably an aftermarket device to make it an almost self-tailing winch. I forget the name, they were some kind of plastic with a groove, the sheet tail was jammed into the groove and it was "self-tailing".

Ok, so should I order Lewmar parts?
Yes. The only parts you may need are pawls and pawl springs. These are the 2 parts get worn or lost. We could start a pool on how many pawl springs you'll lose. :biggrin:They are tricky little devils that like to take off on their own. Fortunately, they are cheap. Also the pawls and springs are the same across most or all of the winches.

You have to take better photos. They are not clear enough. And, when you zoom in (magnify) the resolution is so low that it shows up blurry. Take them again using a higher resolution and then we can better see what you have.

I will try to get better pictures on the weekend, but with to the boat under a tarp it is hard to do better unfortunately

It is difficult to be sure based on the image.
Blowing up the image, I identified the "Made in Australia" on the outer rim. It looks like one of the rubber "Self Tailing" wincher or topper rings Barlow experimented with.

The Metal center ring appears to identify the winch as a 30 or 36. Barlow stamped their winch tops, indicating the type of winch. The 30s and 36s were two speeds. Perhaps looking at the top, you can identify the winch number.

Based on the age of your boat, Barlow and Barient were popular winches for the time. If you can grind the winch in both direction you should detect the winch working at two different speeds.

Barlow and Barient winches are serviceable with parts still available from Hutton-Arco, in Australia. Often, the Lewmar winch springs and pawls are used to rebuild the Barients.

They are 30’s and yes they are 2 speeds, the winchers were installed by me a few years ago.
Even before installing the winchers there was no name on them.
Now I am even more confused, do I order Lewmar parts or Barlow/Barient parts???

I have some Barients and a Barlow. I found I could use Lewmar parts for the consumables.

You may find that they work. Hard to tell until you open the winches up and inspect their condition.

Note: @thinwater posted a side-by-side image of Harken and Lewmar pawls recently. They look the same but are slightly different in size.

You might contact Hutton-Arco and ask about the springs and pawls. They may share that Lewmar parts are ok.

Hello,

Before you order parts you should take the winches apart and clean the internal parts. You may not need anything at all. In my 23 years of sailing and owning 5 boats I have never had to replace a spring or pawl. I did have to order a Barient gear from Arco in Australia but only because I dropped the gear overboard. Remove the old grease. Use A LITTLE new grease. Use a drop of oil on the pawls.

BTW If you do have Barient winches and you do need parts you are probably better off just buying a used winch and replacing the entire thing. Getting parts from Australia is expensive and slow. Older non self tailing winches are very cheap. Older self tailing winches are better but more money.

Anyway step one is cleaning what you have and then you can figure out if you need new parts.

Good luck,
Barry

The winch is a Lewmar. Take a look at this photo of a 1983 vintage Lewmar 16. Note the font is the same and the size labeling is the same.
