So sorry to hear of the failure, Dean. Everyone okay? Have you determined what part of the standing rigging failed that caused the incident? Must have been quite a shock load as the P42 was built with pretty stout rigging. More info would be very helpful.

Worst case scenario - so sorry to hear (and see) about your misfortune. Was anyone hurt?

Do you know what happened to cause the failure?

I sent you a possible lead in the other thread you started on this same topic.

Where exactly did it shear off, Dean? Now you've got me worried about our rigging. Our 1991 has an Isomat mast. Rig Rite might be a source for replacement.

Thank you for the sketch, Dean. So starboard side? The shear occurred within the one piece rod itself; what appears to be where the rod was threaded on the lower part and below the interior cabinets where it attaches to the chain plate, not where it actually attaches to the chain plate or the chain plate itself?

What were the conditions that caused the failure? Any signs of metal fatigue, or corrosion, at the shear point? I've never inspected that part of the rigging system; all out of sight, you know. There were times when ours were under quite a bit of stress, but she held together. Perhaps time to take a close look.

yes the metal down at the hull that we had to cut fiberglass to see is where the corrosion was at. Yes Starboard side.

Obviously we're all curious about how the failure occurred. And are glad there were no injuries.
There hasn't been much in terms of helping you find a mast. That could be because you need to find a new mast and ,thankfully. that is out of most or our experience.
So how does one buy a new mast?
I'll start with you can't go to a Hunter dealer. Maybe you can find a former Hunter dealer? At least a dealer who rigs boats with the brand of mast you had and is local or nearly so. What does the yard where you did the restoration offer?
Insurance? The cost of a new mast, rigging and labor may exceed your boat's value. Then again you might be in a DIY situation. We have no idea.
BTW I've been on two boats which lost their masts. On each I was surprised at how gently the mast came down. Not to say it wasn't scary; but it was like slow motion. The sail seemed to dampen the fall. Again, not helpful for you to find a new mast, but what was your experience?

There are so many boats that get scrapped every day, yet I’ve never been or heard of a salvage yard for sailboats. This has to be a thing, no?

I was partner in a boat last year that had it's mast damaged while being shipped to North America. The Beneteau dealer ordered the mast from the mast manufacturer. It shipped to NA in two pieces. Not cheap on a 31'.....
You have two options, go through a Hunter dealer or go through a rigger/mast hardware dealer. I'm guessing you probably have a Selden mast? If it's Selden, they will have all the data for your boat to build a new one with all the required hardware and correct wire lengths.
