My port mast winch is a standard winch that takes a winch handle - I use it for the main halyard.

The stbd mast winch is the lever action type, I use it for the jib halward.

BTW - I assume we all raise the spinny halyard as fast as we can by hand and then cleat off?

Is there a better way?

 Thanks Peter.  My proctor mast has the same pad on the port side but no winch.  I assumed it came fitted with port & stbd. halyard winches.  I would happily trade a new winch to get my hands on a mate for my stb. halyard winch.  (Photo of winch in group Photos (Estrellita).

As I recall, my series 1 (1146) had one winch for the jib only, on the mast. The main was tensioned with a downhaul on the sliding gooseneck for the boom. The cockpit winches had a handle that locked into the bottom of the winch. The handle didn't interfere with wrapping the jib sheet around the drum. The resulting lever action of these winches was slow and didn't give you as much mechanical advantage as the more modern styles. Richard
