Looking to build a sailboat

I've done very little sailing.....but would like to build a small 10-12' or so wooden sailboat. I know very little about boats.......so I'm looking for suggestions. I want something big enough for a couple of people. Looking for recommendations. Will be sailing on lakes....no ocean sailing. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Easiest way is "stitch and glue". Here are some plans:

chesapeake light craft, in Annapolis, MD has some of the best designs, easily buildable and work quite well, kits on the market. They include almost 100% of everything you need to complete the boat. This is glue and stitch method.

My family and I built a really nice dinghy/skiff with the Reedville, VA museum boat build weekend and it turned out nice as well. This was conventional plywood, screwed to gunwhales, inwhales, and ribs.

There are some kits and schools that do lap and butt construction as well, but a lot more work.

Also look at http://www.duckworksbbs.com/plans.htm. They have many free plans to review and represent several different designers. They specialize in supporting the home builder and, between their store and the Sailboatowners site, I have purchased sufficient materials for many homebuilts.

I'm going to throw out my vote for CLC as well. They have a plan called "passagemaker dinghy" that looks great. When I finish the cedar strip canoe I am working on (ok . . ."if") my son would like to build a passagemaker with me.

I tried to talk him into the smaller version - called the Eastport Pram, but I agree with him that the Passagemaker looks like a really cool boat.

Check out Glen-L , they have great plans and a great builders forum, I'm almost finished with a mahogany runabout. Their in Ca. and have been in business since the 50's and have alot of sailboat plans.
