I have a Yamaha 37 foot Center Cockpit Ketch, built in 1980. She's got a 52 horse Yamaha diesel. I ran into another one that was for sale in San Diego a few years back, but lost track of her. She's the only other I have ever seen. I was just wondering if there were others of 'our kind' out there, I'd like to compare notes.

Would love to see more!!

I had no idea that they made a Ketch, I would love to see more pictures of her if you care to share. There is a 36 exactly like mine on Yachtworld.com for sale and it has a teak deck which is different but never a center cockpit ketch.

Too cool!

Hello:

I have seen 3ea. 36's including Rizman's who is in the group, and know of Bob's 37 through Russ. Apparently there are 5ea. 37 model aft-cockpit. The exterior is very similar but interiors where customized to the owner's choice. Russ's 37 is like the layout on a 33 but more spacious and has a permanently mounted dinette table with two folding leaves that serve both satees. The nav station is to port and the galley to starboard.

There is an aft 3/4 berth that could have been enclosed, and a V berth forward. The head is to port, and there are three hanging lockers plus tons of storage. The cockpit is large enough for a 37 footer, the port lazarette is large enough to stand into, and there is a built in gas tank and a second deep locker to stearn. There is a shallow locker to port where you can keep PFD's and winch handles. This one has a wheel, Bob's has a tiller.

I think the 37 you are referring to in San Diego was a stretched out 36 that was modified in Wa. state by someone. I saw this boat in San Diego in 1997. I did not like what they did and also made the cockpit very long.

I used to own a 33 named Scheherezade that is now owned by a fellow in Los Angeles, I think it is berthed in Long Beach. I tried contacting the current owner but never got a reply from him.

If you want to see some photos let me know. I am also curious of your boat's layout.

Regards,

Ed Serra

I'm always interested in seeing the photos of other Yamaha's, so if you'd like to post them I'd love to see them. I will try to post a few pictures but my internet is sketchy at best. I tried last night to post several photos and when I got up this morning it was still spinning away. I've tried several times since and met with frustration.

The boat I saw in San Diego in 2008 (Tera Nova) was the same as mine, but two years newer. I do not believe it was the same boat you saw that was modified, as there were only a few minor differences between the two. I have photos of her, very clean boat. I'd like to track her down again one day.

My boat is laid out very similar to the one you mention, I have the V berth forward, with 2 bunks, and a full head off the V berth & salon. Across from the head, on the port side is a hanging locker. Then there is the salon. I too had the permanently mounted dinette table with the drop-leaf that would serve both the dinette and settee. The settee backrest folded up to create a bunk, and the seat below became a second bunk. Behind the backrest is storage. I never really liked the built in dinette table, it was nice that it could serve so many, but really, how often do you really need to seat 9 people at a table onboard. It was so awkward, there was never enough foot room when getting into the dinette and I found myself climbing over the cushions rather than get my feet caught on the way in. So I modified it to better suit my needs. I removed the base, and used the drop-leaf for my table top. Plenty of foot room now! The table now swings to the side, or can be removed and stowed out of the way, and also drops down into a 2 person bunk if needed. I have a flat screen tv mounted so I drop it down, and snuggle in there to watch a movie every now and then.
My Nav station is on the port side and galley to starboard, and a walk in engine room is port, just before you get to the aft cabin (enclosed). Just inside the cabin is another hanging locker (starboard). There is a full head in the aft cabin as well. Both my boat and the other have a wheel, with an emergency tiller mounted in the engine room.
