My 1984 Hunter 34 was one of 12 boats that rode out hurricane Isabel at Kingsmill Marina on the James River in Virginia. Of the 12 boats, 9 sunk, 2 were badly damaged, and I got away with some minor damage to the toe-rub rail. I am trying to locate 6-8 feet of rail. Hunter marine has informed me that the company that made that specific rail is out of business. They have suggested I call Tacomarine. They were no help. Does anyone have any good ideas.

Replace the entire rail.
Ken: You indicate that Taco Metals was of no help. They still make toe rail don't they? You can always replace the entire toe rail, that is why we pay for hull insurance (isn't it?).

Can Hunter give you the name of the original manufacturer and is it still in business? I would not be suprised if there are others out there looking to replace some or all of their toeril and it might be feasible to have a special manufacturing run. After 15+ years there no doubt could be several models looking for original replacements. Might be worth the effort. This is one problem with constantly changing designs. Advantage Catalina on the parts issue.

Jeff: It is not much of an advantage when the vendor goes out of business. We can thank the luxury tax for many of these suppliers and boat mfg. for closing up shop. I think you will find that some of the new Catalinas are new now using toe rail and Hunter has quit using it (go figure). My preference is a metal toe rail. I wish Hunter would start using it again.

the metal toerail is much more desirable. My point is that Catalina has kept a greater inventory of parts which are still available for 20+ year old boats. The parts catalogue I have seen is very comprehensive. To my knowledge, Hunter doesn't even have a catalogue. I have seen the question of where to get parts, including toe rail, numerous times on this board usually with no resolution. The original poster was looking for 34 rails. I am aware of another 34 locally which will need new rails. I can also recall a 28.5 boat looking for toe rail after a storm this summer. These are just the ones I recall offhand. It seems the fact that parts for older boats are available is a good selling point and will help maintain the value of older boats.

Check with Boat US Salvage. They had an 84 Hunter 31 in pretty sad shape at their salvage/auction yard in Maryland. If the boat didn't sell it would probably be cut up for the land fill. You may be able to find some rail there. Good luck!

If anybody out there finds a foot and a half of toerail for Hunter 31 i would greatly appreciate it: we banged against the dolphin in just one place, starboard 1/4 way aft from bow. any replies welcome. joe
