I own a H26 that does not have a compass. A lot of my sailing is done on inland lakes where I do not need one; however, I do cross the Sea of Cortez ocassionally where I am out of sight of land. Also, this crossing is done at night. The forward, port side of my cockpit is taken up with instruments (wind, speed, depth, etc.) About the only logical place to put a compass is on the forward, starboard side. Unfortunately, it would have to be on the bulkhead that is used for a backrest when setting on the starboard seat and leaning back against the cabin. Is there such a thing as a compass that uses batteries, e.g. AA, AAA, D Cell, etc., for a night light and that can be detached and stowed when not in use so a person could use that bulkhead for a backrest when the compass is not there?Jim Schaffs/v Savannah
