Looking For The Right Compass

I own a H26 that does not have a compass. A lot of my sailing is done on inland lakes where I do not need one; however, I do cross the Sea of Cortez ocassionally where I am out of sight of land. Also, this crossing is done at night. The forward, port side of my cockpit is taken up with instruments (wind, speed, depth, etc.) About the only logical place to put a compass is on the forward, starboard side. Unfortunately, it would have to be on the bulkhead that is used for a backrest when setting on the starboard seat and leaning back against the cabin. Is there such a thing as a compass that uses batteries, e.g. AA, AAA, D Cell, etc., for a night light and that can be detached and stowed when not in use so a person could use that bulkhead for a backrest when the compass is not there? Try this

Why not mount the compass in an extra companionway board? Then just drop the board in when you want to use the compass, and put it away when it's not needed. The good thing about this method is one less permanent hole in the boat!

Why not....

use a hand-held GPS? Velcro it a companionway hatch board or that bulkhead when you need it.

compass

The gps idea is fine, but only if you have a good usable compass that is properly mounted. When you need it most is when the batteries go out in the gps and its raining and blowing so hard you cant see where your going. then something attached with velcro winds up being knocked off and broken. If your sailing offshore and it sounds like you are go ahead and put in a good bulkhead mounted compass and check to see it is adjusted properly!. that will be one of the best upgrades you can make.

removable compass

We have a removable compass that has a button on the bottom and it takes watch size batteries and it has a little light for use at night. West Marine has several different ones. The one drawback is the bracket stays in place. Ours can also be used as a hand bearing compass so this works good for the kind of sailing we do. Rob Morton S/V Euphoria
