I have a 1987 O'Day 272 that had the shaft cut off at the prop when I got it. I have rebuilt the Westerbeke 10Two engine and I'm now looking to replace the shaft and prop. Does anyone know the correct length of a standard shaft for the 272 and any ideas on where I may get one? I've looked all over the internet and can't seem to get a solid answer on what length I need to get, though I know it's a 1" shaft. I am also wanting to get a 3-blade 12x9 RH prop for the shaft, or a 2-blade if needed. I know the O'Day was made in Massachusetts... has anyone had any experience with this issue or have any suggestions?

Thanks for your reply Brian. I have spoken with Rudy @ D&R Marine but he was unwilling to give me any of this shaft information unless I was willing to commit to buying a new shaft from D&R Marine. Apparently his information is held hostage accordingly!
Thanks so much Woody for your response. I will give General Prop a try also. I have been wanting to know the true length so I could at least get some price comparisons before I actually buy the shaft. I have gotten one price quote that gave me $650 for a stainless shaft but didn't give the specific length. I was told the engine would need to be replaced into the boat first and then the measurements taken from there.
Ahh, Woody, that is the magical question! The rebuilt engine is in my basement along with the portion of the shaft and coupling that was left in the boat. The guy I bought this boat from was a fisherman and the prop kept getting tangled up in lobster buoys. He first tried to beat the prop off (LOL) then he cut off the prop and put on an outboard on a bracket before I bought the boat. He lost the prop before he sold the boat, so that is the answer to your magical question, and yes, I did get a good deal on the boat or I would never have taken it on! Not to mention, it is actually in good shape for her age!
Hi, I have also a O'Day 272 year 1987. My engine is a westerbeke 10-2. I have a leaking stuffing box hose and am going to install a PSS dripless. While it is out of the water, I am going to change flange and Propeller shaft.
Question: Did you ever find out the propeller shaft size and where did you buy it? I would like to have it made by Buck Algonquin but I would like to know the length etc.

Also, I learned an awful lot about the westerbeke 10-2 diesel engine. I saw a lot of inquirys about it and videos. Turned out it had stuck rings. Replaced them in the boat but not with Westerbeke rings, I ordered them from a piston ring MFG for less than $100. Work great !

I've been looking for a 9x12 RH 3-blade prop but don't have one yet. In the manual I have, it calls for a 2-blade. So far, H&H Propeller quoted $617 for one, but they were also nearly twice the quoted shaft price. I was told the correct way to measure the shaft is to measure from the end of the transmission to the back side of the shaft skeg, which holds the shaft bearing, and then you add 4 1/2" to that number. I found the cheapest & most helpful place to get a shaft made is General Propeller,1415 9th Ave E, Bradenton, FL (941) 748-1527, which was recommended to me by others on this site. If you have other questions I may be able to answer, I also have the original owner's manual on the boat, as well as for the Westerbeke Two10.
