Hello, New guy here, looking for a spinnaker for a 1978, 27' hunter. What do I need to know when shopping for one? Sail on Lake Pepin in Minnesota. Just need to get up and down the lake on calm days. Thanx

We fly an asymmetric spinnaker on our '77 h27. A sock makes it easy to deploy. In light wind, we can sail 60 degrees off the true wind - about as good as any other sail, given sheeting on the toerail, and our shoal keel.
I'd go to the closest sailmaker, or use the Doyle shop through this site.

Sounds like you've never had one before. In that case I'd advise going with an asymmetrical (cruising spinnaker) as David suggests. They are smaller and much easier to deal with. All you need is an available spinnaker halyard, a pair of sheets (54' each) and three turning blocks. One turning block is set up on the bow for the tack line and the other two at the back end of each toe rail for your sheets.
Many folks feel intimidated with spinnakers but they are real easy to learn and can be loads of fun.
