Looking for some direction on my electrical system

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction or maybe towards some good resources. I picked up an O'day 25 last summer. The boat was free to a good home and so far I think I am pretty fortunate on the find. It was on a mooring and floating so I figured that was a good start. The boat has been raced the last 10 or so years and has new rigging and sails. The 2 stroke 8hp outboard is in good shape. The boat appears to be in decent all around shape with exception to the interior.
I've gutted and scrubbed the boat bow to stern and replaced the head.
My next project is the electrical system. I have a good amount of background in AC and DC voltage. I can do the work, but looking for help with the design. I also picked up Don Casey's Complete Maintenance Manual which is great, but doesn't really get into system design.
The existing wiring is horrible. It is melted in some places and on the verge in others. My intent is to take a rake to it and start from scratch.
I want to do it right the first time and not look back.
What components are essential? What kind of luxuries should I consider? What is the "ideal" design?
She's going to be on a mooring so I need to maintain the batteries somehow. Suggestions?

You're going to need to take stock of what you have on your boat that needs to be powered. By that I mean, if you have a mast head light and a steaming light, figure on running two duplex wires or four separate conductors to them. Both of these lights need a ground and both need to be on a separate switch. So you're probably going to need four conductors. I wouldn't put a mast head light and a steaming light on one common ground, myself.
You would only turn your steaming light on if you were motoring at night. For this reason, you would put it on a separate switch and this holds true for the mast head light.

Then you have your bow and stern lights which should be on the same breaker or switch. We are talking two wire, black- and red + for these circuits.
Then you have your dome lights in the cabin which can come off the same breaker. Usually these interior lights have their own switches on the light and the breaker can be left on.
Your compass light can be tied into the running lights.

Then you'll most likely need power for your VHF radio which can come off the same breaker as you interior cabin lights. Other circuits for an autopilot for instance could be run in anytime but if you plan on replacing the stern light conductors, now would be a good time to run in another pair for a future autopilot connection.
My Johnson 8 hp has a charging unit to keep my battery up. I never cared much for those marine recepticals and plugs that they sell at Worst Marine. They're made for small conductor wire and they go bad after a period of time. I don't think you get a good connection to your battery when they are plugged in. The set screws on these connectors a tiny and they cross thread pretty easy. They're junk.
What I did was replace the wire on my outboard with a copper stranded #10 two wire duplex which I made long enough to reach a small terminal strip connector mounted on the rear bulkhead just under the cover of the lazarette. I cut a piece of a PC mouse pad and used two wood screws to cover it.
I removed the guts from the old electric outlet on my inner transom and I ran the charging wire over the transom and through the outlet to the term strip. I have another two wire #10 copper duplex coming off this term strip to my battery.
Every year when I mount my outboard I run this wire through and the 8" Beckson deck plate that I have mounted in the center of my inside transom allows me easy access to this wire as well as my self bailing cockpit hose, stern light, gudgions, swim ladder, and etc.

If your load center or electric panel is questionable, you should replace it with new. The new load centers have built in LEDs and they are wired in just a little different than the old panel that is on your boat right now.

The panel that came with my 1986 O'Day 222 has a red + wire running from the battery to a buss bar in my panel. All my black - wires are twisted together with a black wire coming from my battery. To my way of thinking, this is kind of Mickey Mouse, but I bought the boat new and that's the way that they set it up at the factory.
My suggestion to you is to buy a terminal connector strip for the grounds only if you don't have one on your existing panel, or a new panel if you choose to buy one.
This way, you have better access to each pair of wires and you could separate any pair and ring them out a lot easier in the event that you ever have a fault in your wiring.

In essence, what I'm saying is, take note of what you have and figure on running your wires to them along an area of the cabin interior where they can't be seen.
My cabin has a fabric headliner and all my wiring is under it. Each pair is red and black and appear to be single conductor.

The wiring on these boats are so simple that a wiring diagram really isn't needed. You can make your own wiring diagram.

That's a lot of info! Thanks for taking the time Joe.
I think a new load center is worth the investment. I like the thought of everything electrical being new.
These are what I'm planning on powering, what else am I missing?
- Interior lighting
- Radio
- Running lights (bow, stern, mast, steaming, compass)
- Bilge
- Cigarette lighter
- Navigation

Redoing my 25's electrical is "on the list" as well but, it will be a while before I get to it. Check MainSail's threads on solar and electrical. My list of thing I am going to wire are;

- Running Lights
- Masthead Light
- Steaming Light
- Cabin Lights
- Deck Light(s)
- Cockpit Light
- Bilge Pump
- "Cigarette Lighter" Outlets, probably one inside and one outside
- Instrumentation (if any)
- VHF
- Fresh Water Pump
- Outboard starter

I thought of an inverter but, I can get 12v connection for my phone and laptop. Keep us posted and lots of pics!

Use only tinned wire - copper oxide (found on corroded copper wire) is not a good conductor. Tinning on the wire makes for better connections. Strictly speaking, silver tinned wire is the best because silver oxide conducts electricity very well, but it would be prohibitively expensive overkill on a boat.

There is great debate over crimped connections versus soldered connections. I was discussing this with my girlfriend's father recently. He's a mechanical engineer who has spent the last however many years designing circuit breakers, so he is essentially an electrical engineer by default (he explained to me about tinned wire.) He's also a power boater, and he feels that properly done crimp-on connectors are better than soldered. Soldered joints aren't very flexible. In any case, if you choose to do crimps, and use waterproof heat shrink crimps, a) be prepared for sticker shock on the connectors, and b) use a good crimping tool like this one: http://www.sailorssolutions.com/index.asp?page=ProductDetails&Item=WP042 I don't want to open a can of worms on the crimp vs. solder debate, but if you're going to pick one, do it right. Which means Western Union joints on the solder.

I use crimp on connectors myself but I believe in sealing them good with either liquid tape or heat shrink covers. You need to keep the air and moisture from getting at them.

I just scanned over Blake's pdf and there is a lot of useful info in it but sailboat wiring is not rocket science. What you need to know to do this job is the wire sizes. You could measure the existing conductor sizes with a regular wire crimping tool which has the wire stripping holes marked with gauge sizes, or check out Don Casey's books for the info.

You need to know that your running lights, bow and stern need to be wired into the load side of the same circuit breaker so that they both come on together.

The mast head light needs to come off a separate switch and so does your steaming light. All you need is red and black wires. That's all they used in these boats when they put them together at the factory.

I got rid of my cabin dome lights years ago and hid the wires under the head liner. I use self contain LED lights only for a short duration when I need them. I have Velcro glued to the back of the lights and I can remove them and place them anywhere I want light. I have three of them, one in the main cabin and two in the V birth section.

My mast has internal halyards and it never came with a steaming light. I added a steaming light to my new mast and the wire to it got broke. For the few times which I had motored at night on the bay, I felt that it wasn't worth having and I removed it several years ago.
As far as my mast head light goes, I never use it but I want it to work properly in the event that I ever have to use it.
I'm only speaking for myself when it comes to what lights I feel that I need and the lights I feel that I can do without.
I have a 100 Amp Hour deep cycle house battery and I try it keep the electric consumption to a minimum so that I can always have enough power to run my Autohelm ST 1000+ and my VHF whenever I need it. I use my autopilot constantly.
Some guys like to wire in a marine stereo with speakers and that's OK, but a cheap C battery powered AM/FM radio is good enough on my boat.

You only need to figure out what is needed on your boat then you can add whatever you want and take it from there.

Check my post history, or did through my blog. I redid most of the electrical system on my boat over the last few years.

New batteries, battery switch, main DC distribution, solar charging, new electrical panel, etc... that is in addition to things like all LED lights, new chart plotter, stereo, etc...

I have lots of links to where I bought he various components and parts mixed throughout the posts.

Also, since no one has mentioned it yet (unless you have already read through my blog), genuinedealz.com, your first place to shop for all marine electricial wire and connectors, then this site would be your # 2.
