My wife and I are looking for our first real sailboat and have decided on a Catalina 30 shoal draft. Preferably tall rig. Late 80's or thereabouts. For immediate purchase. MD or VA. Anybody know anybody thinking about moving up? Clean, well-maintained boats only. Thanks, Joe F.

It's a great boat...

I was my first real "big boat" that I actually owned that was not my families boat. They have great room are reliable, great cockpit and tons of resources for parts etc.. You're going to love it! Good luck finding one but don't skimp and buy a project boat you'll be sorry...

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Try to find one around 1988 or later

From what I have heard, the 1988 boats were the start of using a different resin that doesn't blister as much (that is what I have heard from other sources). Try to at least get an MK II. My Catalina 30 is a 1990 Tall Rig Bow Sprit. I paid around 35,000 for the boat. I have done a little work and added a few things, but it was in good shape and a boat in that price should hang around 35,000. There was a boat that was for-sale at Tidewater Marina in Anapolis MD. It was a 1991 and I think that they were asking 38,000. It has been on the market since last year and you might be able to get it at a good price. Try www.yachtworld.com That is a good site for looking for boats. Just type in your permeters and you should find what you are looking for. I absolutely love my 30. It is a great boat, it is stiff, handles well, and I feel very safe in it (It survived 40 mph winds and 8 foot seas off the coast of Smith Point at the mouth of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay).
