Hi all - looking for a boat ramp near Rock Hall, MD, to launch a trailer sailor with ~ 30" draft, so a deepish ramp is nice. any suggestions? Also, I'd like somewhere to park the truck and trailer for a week. I haven't done a trip of this sort before..any sugegstions?

Check the depths by marine chart or 'actual' before you launch. Most launch ramps have parking (usually limited and ON the road) ... but you can probably park your truck/trailer in a nearby marina for a few $$$$. they show all of the launch ramps. RichH, knows the rules over there better than I so take his advise. Realize that you can launch at Rock Hall or Chestertown or on Langford Creek. Those places are several hours apart by boat.

The Sailing Emporium, Rock Hall, MD. Art Willis, Owner. His son, Bob, is a good contact. (410) 778-1342. Gratitude Yachting Center. I think both have ramps and would allow you to store your car and trailer.

...launch ramps require a permit. Non-resident permits are limited and sell out fast. Your're probably better off with a privately owned marina. I would think that parking security would be better as well. 15 years ago I had a trailer sailor and launched from a private marina in Chestertown. I don't remember the name but I do remember that it was a long 7-9 miles against the tide to get to the bay. When are you planning this trip? Let us bay sailors know when you plan on going and maybe we could get together. Tom s/v Orion's Child

Why, next monday, for a few days. Yes, I know it might be a little chilly, but I don't get to pick when spring break is! Plus, after living in Rochester, NY, it probably won't seem chilly to *me*
I think I'm going to go with the Long COve, barring any negative feedback. Transient slip is a little pricy at $35, especially for march, but it takes care of parking, launch permits, gives me a place to stay at night instead of anchoring in unfamiliar waters, and is located on the body of water between East Neck and the river mouth (I don't know if I should be calling it the bay, or the river). Now, to go install my brand new 35 gallon fuel tank in my F-150... (to augment the non-leaking 16 gallon one already there, and replace the leaky 18 gallon one)

Long Cove Marina is a old, long time family owned marina that takes care of a large fleet or Watermen. They are very nice people, but being of eastern shore by birth, they are slow to warm up to you. When they do, they will do anything for you. I have had prop and shaft work done there. They are the best on the bay for that. Their prop shop is the envy of most everyone. The pleasure boats there during the summer are all in first class shape. A testiment to the marina owners and to the boat owners. Its not unusual to find a circumnavigator or foreign cruiser there for work or storage. Its at least two hours to the bay at Love point, depending on tide. It's still the real Chesapeake there with real eastern shore watermen. If you want to be right on the bay, call Bob Willis at The Sailing Emporium in Rock Hall. If you go there, stop by and hug my boat for me. Enjoy it. It will all be gone soon. Dave s/v ARIEL

Sorry, I won't be joining you, you're on your own. That's one of the advantages of being on a trailer, you can go sailing anytime there is a break in winter, at a moments notice. Plenty of great places within 1-2 days sail from Long Cove. I'm guessing you probably won't have to deal with crowded anchorages. Just make sure the vhf is working, not many boats on the water to help you if you run into trouble. Have fun, Be safe, Tom s/v Orion's Child

Wow...so I hooked up the trailer today to go over the bearings and whatnot.. 6 degrees here in rochester!!! I didn't even get to doing any work on the trailer...beyond being buried under 2 feet of snow, i was horrified to discover that between freeze and thaw my tires had sunk down to the rim into now-frozen mud AND i have a flat.. hours later..she's parked in the driveway. Next year i put plywood under the tires.

MAde it most of the way, to my parents house outside philadephia. One of my trailer tires sprung a slow leak, so I made a point to stop by tractor supply and pick up a new one. Pretty cool - they sell load rated tires, pre mounted, balanced, and inflated, for less than a tire shop will put a new tire on an old rim!
