Looking for new mast

Well my season has ended even before it began. The Marina Tracktor driver hooked my lines on another boat and I’m done. So.... anybody know where one can get a mast for a 2008 Hunter 25? (Preferably in Canada)

Former Hunter dealer but what mast do you have? Is it U S Spars? That is important to know. I know Dave Groshong with SBO as well plus I worked in claims for Liberty mutual before coming a sailboat dealer

First mast mfg. look for sticker either on mast or boom

Thank you Dave. I will have a look for that info on Tuesday. Is there any other key items I should be inspecting for with the Insurance adjuster? I’m concerned with the shrouds especially the starboard which took the impact and snapped the port spreader. Should all shrouds be replaced? One other bit of advice I need is on the B&R rig mast rake. It is set at the factory, so I assume I will need to set that myself.

I will help on tuning. Look at the shroud and forestay chain plates to see if they pulled particularly the shroud chain plates. Look under the rub rail as well. Not sure about the riilgging but look for any broken wires and see if any of the crimped wires pulled from the crimped studs

Hi Dave,
I had a look today and it's a US Spars.
The info on the tag is a bit hard to read but this is what I can see:
Type H25
Code 15661 (not sure if its a 1)
Ref.Z Z170 (I think )
Also, I inspected the shrouds and chain Plates. The shrouds that made contact with the other boat have a kink so Im sure they have been stressed. Chainplates look OK top and under the rub rail. Once the mast is lowered I will be able to look closer. attached are some more detailed photos.

Its a no brainer if that mast is damaged the way it is, and at least one of the spreaders is bent or broken, its advisable to replace all the standing rigging. Might as well replace the jib furler and running rigging while you are at it. I hope your yard has good insurance, but there is probably fine print that indicates they will not take responsibility. That mast is probably going to cost more than the boat is worth.

The good news is that the people at US spars will probably have the mast extrusion, standing riggings specs, hardwre and running rigging dimensions. They are pretty good people to deal with.

I’m sure the initial Awww :poop: moment wasn’t any fun but it looks like you are making progress working your way through this. Getting current pricing on all the components that you might be concerned with is clearly in your interest to do.

I have one other suggestion, perhaps it might have value to have a marine surveyor take a look and provide a written opinion to aid in any negotiations you might have with either the yard and/or the insurance company(s).

I did not mean to devalue your boat, nor that an insurance company would total it.
But having experienced a dismasting, I can speak from experience. The cost of a new mast, standing rigging, and running rigging is probably going to be north of five figures.

The mast is actually a Z Spar mast when I saw Z 170. Z Spar bought out Kenyon Isomat in Charlotte during the 90’s laying off everyone except for four who went to the plant in Charlotte as Kenyon Isomat laid off everyone leaving four to build masts for everyone. Could not supply the manufacturers and even I had to wait for months to get masts. Z Spar left the country. Selden masts came along and rest is history. Z Spar re-emerging as U S Spars. Yes their masts are the same.
Kinked rigging needs to be replaced and the turnbuckles and studs too.

As to chain plates, I need you to advise any cracks seen on top but specifically look under the rub rail for any damage but it may be hard as there is a bar that distributes the load.

If mast is up with a broken spreader, take the main halyard and attach it to that side of the boat to stabilize the mast. Getbthst mast down now getting the yard to do that at no cost as they are liable. As for the furler is a CDI FF2 it should be fine but wait till it is inspected. They are now in Canada and great folks to deal with. When ordering the mast, make sure the holes are in to accept the mast stabilizer wires. As for the rigging anyone can duplicate it but I believe it was the rigging company near Tampa that made it. Deal with Dave Grishong and between Dave and Al they can help.

Insist on a marine surveyor to inspect for the insurer or insurance company.
