Well, its about time for my injectors (been 9 year) to be inspected and repaired if necessary. Looking for a place in the Fredericksburg,VA area. Anywhere from Norfolk to Annapolis that can recommend a facility to me.

Take them to any diesel truck or tractor repair shop. Injectors are injectors.

Suggest you replace rather than "recondition" -- from many years of C34 experiences.

Every town in the country over 10,000 population will have an "injector shop". Easy for them to inspect and repair ... virtually all automobiles and trucks whether gasoline or diesel powered use injectors.

I disagree, find a decent shop that has "experience"with your engine's injectors. injectors are not injectors, the world around. That may have been true years back. But now some are old school, with o-rings or retainers, without, adjustable, throwaway, some are electronic controlled others mechanical...new ones multiport, solenoid controlled, variable timing, common rail, individual, etc, etc.

Sadly, they (the shops CAN and often do) make them WORSE and you are confident that it can not "be an injector" because they just were repaired/fixed/rebuilt. After you spend $$$ on other things, then you come back to the injector, again.

Not sure what you have

I'm not sure what engine you have, but I am in a very similar boat. Did a bunch of research, and found several shops that would rebuild mine. Price was 80 to 100 bucks each. Called the local Yanmar distributor and brand new injectors are 106 bucks. To me that seems like a no brainer, plus having a spare set that I know are reasonably good.

Finally got the injectors out

Got the injectors out today and they are not pretty... See photo.
Have already purchased a new set and should have them install by Wednesday this week. Old injectors will be sent out to be cleaned and repaired. Will need to check these things a little sooner than every 9 years.:)

Jim:

What causes this? My old '85 Hunter 31 probably has 1500+ hrs on the motor and the injectors have never been touched.

What was your engine doing that caused you to inspect the injector.

Hi Steve,

Model is 3GM30F YEU. We have almost 1900 hrs on the engine. What caused it is a toss up until I get the injector people to look at them. My guess is running at around 2000 to 2200 rpm for hours on end - power sailing... When not power sailing I'm running at 2800-2900 rpm. We did get some water in the fuel that took some time to work its way out - mostly draining the fuel bowl, fuel filters many times. What I know about diesel engines can be placed inside the head of a pin.... Btw all three injectors look like this

edit: just re-read your post. Smoking and blowing diesel out the exhaust as I raised the rpm's. Also a friend on the boat was listening to the engine and ask when was the last time I inspected them. Then it was off to the races...

I know that water is bad if it gets to the injectors, but WOW!

Let us know if they are rebuildable or not.

Got the new injectors in today and bleeding them was a snap. What a difference in the sound of the engine and no smoking. In neutral the rpms went right up to 3600 and was cruising at 2900-3000 purring real nice. This will be something on the must do every 2-3 years.
