I would like to add an outboard to my Hunter as my 13 hp Yanmar is not getting the job done as I use it for day sailing and need some more power getting in and out of the harbor. Thank you jw.
Hi John,A 3-blade prop and/or a clean slippery bottom will probably provide an inexpensive, easier and safer alternative to your quest. You will lose a little top speed.Cheers,-Keith
More power is not necesarily the same as more speed - which do you want? (for example, trolling motors are amazingly powerful, but not very fast...) My harbor has a 5mph limit, and my motor drives my hull 5.5kts at top throttle.
I have in my Hunter a 13 HP Yanmar and was looking to get a bit more speed and was thinking of some sort of outboard setup but I do not know if it is possible or practical. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks John Walsh.
my friends 30 has the same engine and will run hull speed at about 3/4 throttle. the boat will go a hair faster at full throttle but its not worth the wear and tear and the extra fuel. 1.3 x the waterline length will give you the hull speed. then check what your running. and you will have a starting point. you may or may not improve yuur actual speed with more motor.the combination using two does not work out to well. one of them winds up doing most of the work while the other over revs or drags.
I tried adding an outboard and it works to a degree. Actually bought 9.8 Tohatso elec start when Yanmar Ysm12 started acting up. Yanmar blew on a weeklong vacation trip and we never missed a beat except to buy more gas cans. After rebuilding Yanmar, I still have outboard on back. Only sailboat around with twin screws. Actually I only use the ob when I need more punch to keep up with the big boys or to get home in a hurry. 9.8 will push our 79-30 as fast as Yanmar but is noiser and uses more fuel. With both we make great speed. OB is not that great in rough seas. It will come out of the water and I prefer to dock with Yanmar as well, don't have to hang over back. But I am not taking it off.
I have a 1980 Hunter 30 with the two cylinder Yanmar 2QM15. With the original two blade prop (13X13)I could not get anywhere near hull speed and the engine smoked (black) somewhat. After talking to several prop people, I changed to a three blade Campbell Sailor (13X9). I now get 6 knots (on the GPS) at 2700 RPM and very little smoke. If you contact almost any prop manufacturer they can give you an estimate on the best prop setup for your boat.
