Looking for hints ... electrical issues?

Your starter, like most, is case grounded. Often the case gets some corrosion and won't make a sufficient ground. Clean under the bolt heads with a brass wire brush or Dremel and Scotch-Brite disc also clean the mating faces where the starter meets the bell housing. Make sure the two bolts that hold the starter are also clean. A bench griunder with brass wheel works well for cleaning bolts up. Then do the same for the engines ground lug.

Using a volt meter check the white wire that comes off the back of the rubber push start button for 12v when you activate it (it should be white but may not be at this point). This is the energizing voltage for the starters built in solenoid (technically a magnetic switch).

If you have the starter off you might as well bench test it by sticking it in a vice and using a spare battery and some jumper cables to test it. You definitely want it in a vice or the torque will lauch it off your bench!

Connect the ground of the jumper cable to the case and run a small 12v pos wire from the battery to the small "S" term where the white wire connected. With 12v to the "S" term simply touch the positive clamp of the jumper cables to the big B post where the battery cable connected. If the starter spins it is most likely good and one item will be eliminted.

Resolved! (hopefully)

I did the bench test on the starter and guess what ... it seems to be fine. I brought my batts home to charge anyway so I connected cables, using a bolt to ground to the case. I found that it worked well to connect the cables and just touch a start wire to the S term. I also checked the ignition wiring and found no faults. I did find that the crimp on my alternator wire was pathetically done and had failed. I'm figuring that was the reason for the low batt charge and when I put it all together tomorrow, I should be back in business. I could have done it this afternoon, but we enjoyed a very nice sail instead. No need for a motor when we can sail from and to the mooring! There was a bass fishing tournament centered at Lees Park this weekend so my wife was a little nervous about all the bass boats milling around our mooring, not to mention jet skis, wave runners, and all kinds of ski boats. We were threading the needle making our way thru the boats and turning upwind to catch the mooring. It was a real zoo since it was at the point in time when boats were milling around waiting for their turn on the ramps.

Anyway, I was thinking that 12.4 v would be enough to get the starter to turn over but after reading up a little it seems that low batt level is about 12.7 v so maybe there really was no mystery! :) Thanks for all your comments! It was actually productive to go thru all those exercises, I think.

I'm guessing this may have been a typo.? 12.4 is nearly 70% charged if you took that voltage after the battery had time to sufficiently rest..

I just scanned the thread, so sorry if I missed it if you have already done this but... since you already have the batteries out why not take them to an auto parts store and have them tested.

They would probably do it for free.

Mixing applications???

I was reading the Blue Sea Systems technical literature for their Battery Link ACR. I talks about default settings for sensed voltage at 13.5 v for combined and 12.7 v for the UNDERVOLTAGE default setting. I'm sure I am mixing up the application as this would probably be during a charge? When I was charging the 2 batts on a trickle charger yesterday, I had over 14 volts while charging, 13.4 volts right after removing the charging cables, and about 12.9 v after resting briefly. I just checked them again after resting over night and the newer batt is 12.83 v and the older batt (purchased in 2004) is 12.54 v - and I don't think I charged the older one as fully as the newer one yesterday.

So now I am back to wondering why I could not get even a click from my starter on Saturday morning when the batts had charges of 12.50 and 12.45 v respectively after resting overnight (measured at the posts and at the cables), the cables were all clean with good connections, and I had power at the ignition. The case grounding may have been the issue and I will be installing again today. I did open up the starter and inspect the coils which were clean, bright and shiny.
