Looking for Colorado Sailing Expertise

Macgregor 25 Cherry Creek
Hi

I own a Macgregor 25 and keep it at Aurora Reservoir. 90 percent of my sailing is done at Aurora, Cherry Creek and Chatfield with an occasional trip to places like Pueblo, Granby, etc. I am looking at buying an anchor for my boat and need to know what type would be best and how much of chain and rode I should get. I hope that there are sailors on the forum with experience in sailing in Colorado and would know what would be my best, most cost effective, set up. Oh, my boat displaces 2100lbs.

Looking forward to my continuing education.

Give a call to my buddy, Dave at Sage Marine in Golden. He sails in your area. Great sailing experience gleaned sailing in the Puget Sound. (303) 339-7076.

Just a suggestion.... but it is probably safer to send phone numbers through a PM. This thread will live on the net indefinitely.

Thank you. I'll remember that. Number is a public number but caution is always great advice. Thanks.

While the type of bottom is always helpful to know, here's how to size your anchoring system. Most folks use at least the length of their boat in using chain/rode combinations.

Anchor System Sizing Tables (Reply #6) & Why Swivels are a bad idea http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,4990.msg30400.html#msg30400

You could also do a search for "Sumner," he sailed a lot there on a Mac 25, IIRC. He has a very good website with his posts and great ideas.

What has worked very well, always held in western waters and other waters, with my Mac that is close to yours is a 22 lb. claw, 150-200' of 3/8" 3 twist nylon and 25-30 feet of 1/4 inch chain. You can find all of that on this site or others at reasonable cost. A 22 lb. claw is a little over-sized but if you don't ever want to worry under any conditions go with it as it is still easy to recover. The above combination will be dead reliable for you.

I now use the claw as my second anchor and a 25 lb. Manson Supreme as the primary but never had a problem with the claw except for once in Florida when it might of drug about 20 feet one night but still held.

Ruth and I sailed McPhee Reservoir for our first ever sail north of Cortez, CO and Lake Powell is within a day of you also and is beautiful.

You can find more info here on my site about rode bags, marking your rode and other anchoring solutions that might work for you....
