I'm getting ready to start my third sailing season, second on my own H34. I have done almost all my sailing in the Chesapeake Bay and it's been great. But I dream of longer passages along the east coast and into the West Indies. I figure the best way to get experiance is to find a captain looking for good crew. If you are looking to make a passage and need some help along the way Id like to go. I'm a good crew member with references. I learn fast and work hard. I'm 43, father of five ages 10-21, and married to the same women for 22 years. I own a successfull business in Virginia and can get away with a little notice. I'm willing to travel up and down the east coast and will share expenses. One way voyages are not a problem. The race is the glamour event. But once the race is over the boats have to get back and all the crews don't take the boat both ways. Delivery captains are hired to bring boats back and hiring crew just cuts into their profit. So they love volunteer crew that can stand watch. Make sure to check for boats that need crew coming back Thats how I got my ride back. David

I checked out some of those crew sites. If I had the vacation time I would go in a second. What will you do?

Ed, What will I do? Sail I hope. And learn a little about the ocean. I'll do what I'm asked to do. If I don't know how to do something I'll ask. I'm anxious to get that ocean time. Last year three times I tried. I sailed off the Keys twice but it was basically like the Chesapeake in August. I also went to the Abacos to help a friend sail his Saga 43 back. My window for leaving was seven days but we never left the mooring. The weather the whole week was from the north in the 17-23 knot range. Everyone down there was waiting for the right time. I couldn't wait any longer. Bummer. I'm ready to go with a few days notice with the right captain. You got plans? JM PS. I enjoy your posts.

you might want to consider the Carribean 1500. The boats leave from Hampton about the 1st weekend in Nov. and sail to Tortola. (about 10-12 days) Go to the web site... there is a "want to crew" regristry.....
