Hi All! We're looking for input as to a good place to move to in retirement where we can sail, preferably in bays or rivers, not ocean. We are fairly new sailors and have a Rhodes 22. We live in Virginia now and are looking south along the coast - NC, SC, Fla. But, with many options and not having sailing in any of them, we need some input as to where other sailors might recommend. We'd appreciate any suggestions and won't blame you if it turns out poorly!! Thanks! Fran and Dave

brings back memories
The first time I took somebody out, it was my sister, on my 21' draw keel. We got out 1/3 the way and the wind died. I started up my little 2HP and motored back but ran out of gas still a long way away from the dock. First I tried to row the boat but that didn't work. So then I walked out on the bow, grabbed the anchor and proceeded to throw and retrieve until I got to the bank about 300 yards away. I started walking to the back door of the very nice house on the river bank but had to increase my pace because of a hungry, very large, lizzard looking sneaker eater that impressed me with his speed. Believe it or not, the diving board is what saved me (I guess he can run but can't use a diving board). My sister never went out with me again

more enjoy the warm sailing in the summer if you have memories of the winter. Nancy and I enjoy sailing the upper chesapeake from may to november and in the months between say to each other "gosh it's nice to have a warm house, this would be a lousy day for sailing!" Fran, Where do you sail out of? we keep Bietzpadlin in Perryville on the susquehanna river.

The St. John is beautiful cruising ground. I belive the creek reffered to in an earlier post is the Black Creek, I might be wrong, there are a couple of large creeks in the area. Another nice area just off the river is Doctors Inlet.

From Orlando south
I'm enjoying the warm weather in middle Florida now, but cold fronts do come through here and bring stiff cold breezes once in a while. If the warmth is important, aim south of Tampa on the West Coast or Cape Canaveral on the east coast. Punta Gorda/Fort Myers area has some great sailing, including islands with no bridges to visit, as does the Indian River lagoon from Melbourne to Fort Pierce, but be aware it gets shallow in lots of places... From either side of the state you can reach the other through Lake Okechobee waterway -- a fascinating trip. If you want to avoid crowds, and D.C. housing costs, you'll have to stay away from the larger cities. But you can stay warm. Sanders Satellite Beach, FL
