Wellll...My boat is finally ready to do a little cruising and we have a whole week coming up to play. Other than off of the monument at Put In Bay, are there any other anchorages in the area I can use to introduce my wife to cruising? Thanks! Griffin s/v Brighid's Crossing

Kelley's Island

A favorite spot of ours is the cove on the north end of Kelley's Island, right there by the state park. No marina on that end of the island, but nice sand beach, park has showers, glacial grooves on the island, short walk to small market with ice. The market also rents golf carts to get around the island, which makes getting to the winery much easier. We actually tow our H26 from Chicago out to Sandusky every summer just for the trip. A couple of days out at Kelley's and then a day at Cedar Point for the kids. T J

To name a few

If you have not been to Put in Bay then stay a few days. The new Museum and the Monument are a must see and ther is so much more then the water front. If you plan to anchor out the lee shore of all the islands is a safe bet. You can anchor by the Momument and ther is a water taxi that will pick you up. Pay close attention to the forcast on the wind direction if the wind chages to the North and you are anchored by the Monument it will be a very unpleasnt night. Ther is a sign that states around the Monument to not have good holding but we have never had a problem and we do it every summer. Middle Bass has a new Marina and I have heard it is pretty nice but have not been ther yet. If you have kids or feel like a kid and are into Roller Coaster's & ride's and has a water park then Cedar Point is a must. But you will not get an over night dock as they are gobbled up in January. But they do have day docks that people tend to stay all night at. Also on the East side of the Brake wall going into Sandusky Bay is a great place to spend the day. Nice sandy area and beach but is Cedar Point Proberty and they really don't want you on the beach but we have never had a problem. Pelee Island is Canada and you will need to check in to customs going both ways. But Pelee is pretty much a Sleeper not really a whole lot going on ther. The South Bay of Pelee Island is very nice for overnighting. Again pay close attention to the wind. If you do stay the night in South Bay you will need to go to the North Side if the Island to check into Customs and then go to South Bay. Vermillion to the East of the Islands is a nice place to visit. Ther is a Great Lakes Shipping Museum ther and is a very nice place. Plus allot shops to see. Huron does not have a whole lot going on but does have free concerts at the Boat Basin and other times has other stuff going in in the Boat Basin. Port Clinton is about like Vermillion with allot of shops and places to got to and makes for a nice trip. Port Clinton Yacht club is a great place and is a ILYA memeber. Going to some of the Lake Towns on the weekend is a better bet and seeing Put In Bay during the week is the best time to go. Allot less crowded and you will get a dock or we prefer a morring ball. Morring ball is cheaper and you can use the water taxi as much as you want. The weekend of June 12th and 13th we have the Mill's Race on Fri Nght and you will not find a dock ther will be about 200 Mast's tied up every where. Island is flooded with Sailor's. Good time. Some anchorages

North side of Kelly's (already mentioned) East side of Middle Bass - great sandy spot tucked in at the north end. Never been there, but I'll bet that the west side of Middle Bass would be fine in a Nor'easter. South Bay of Pelee (already mentioned) If your cell phone works, you can check in to Canada by phone. North Side of Sandusky Bay. We stayed a night between the two islands north of the coal terminal. (Watch out for new shoal water at the north side of the entrance to the bay.) Enjoy the stay. These are all good anchorages, but none of them have a perfect 360 degree protection. The first time I went to Put-in-Bay, you could anchor where the mooring balls are now. Ahh the good old days! If you can afford it, though, a mooring ball there is a great place to stay. All the advantage of anchoring out, plus a very competent and high service water taxi to take you ashore whenever the whim strikes. David Lady Lillie

Thanks guys!

Thanks guys! I spent a few weekends on the hook at PIB last year...OK...more than a few...and will spend more than a few this year. I was thinking about Huron, but since I lived on a hook for 3.5 years on the East Coast, I am allergic to marinas <grin>. I had heard you could drop a hook in Huron, but don't know where. Any ideas on that? Thanks again for the ideas...we leave out tomorrow afternoon. If any of you are up there this summer, we are at Midway Marina on Catawba. The boat has no name on her yet, but we will answer to Brighid's Crossing on 9 or 16. She is a 34' O'Day...come knock on the hull! Griffin.
