Season 3 with my O'Day 25 is coming up and I have resisted the incredible urge to get a bigger boat (for now). I do feel the urge to blow money that I will never recover every spring however, so my project list is starting now. I am for sure stripping the bottom and repainting with Interlux Micron CSC Extra, and am considering painting the hull black with a white cove stripe. On deck the only teak I have not refinished is the toe rail. I do not have jib tracks for sliding cars on deck, so I have been thinking of ripping off the teak and replacing with alimunum toe-rail for more flexibility, less long term maintenance and a more modern look. I have some questions: 1. What is the purpose of the toe rail - the only thing I have found it useful for is occasionally catching a screw driver when I drop it on deck. 2. Where can one get aluminum toe rail, and should it be one continuous piece or sectioned as the teak toe rail is? Thanks in advance for your advice and assistance Dave

Our 25 had tracks on the cockpit coamings.

Pretty far aft, but for the 170 we had it was fine. There is a company called Taco I think that makes aluminum toe rail - I have seen it in the West Marine catalogue, although I suspect like everything else, there are places to find it cheaper. I can't find it in West's online catalogue, but I know it is in the paper version. Here is a link to the manufacturer - I think it comes in different shapes as well: http://www.tacomarine.com/item--1-9-16-x-1-1-2-Aluminum-Sailboat-Toe-Rail--A62-0009.html -- Scott Fuller O34 Dawn Treader Milwaukee, WI

Toe Rail

keeps your foot from sliding off the deck, especially the foredeck.
