Hello, I was given a 1974 22ft Helsen a few months back and am almost done restoring it. The only problem is that the only sails I have are for a 25ft catalina (storm jib/main and a regular jib/main). From what I was told, these are practically brand new and were given to me as well (they do have some brown staining due to sitting under a beach house). My problem is that the Helsen sail has dimensions of I=24 J=9.5 P=20 E=8.8 ( found different values here, not sure which is right. http://sailritesails.com/ShowAd.aspx?BoatName=HELSEN 22&id=5818&SourceID=1) and the catalina sails are I=29 J=10.5 P=24.67 E=9.58 . So I was wondering if anyone might have a sail laying around that they are not using that fits these Helsen dimensions and would be willing to sell/trade/donate. I have toyed with the idea of just making the catalina sails smaller but 5ft is a lot to take off the I. Thanks

Yeah, but i have found two different sets of dimensions for the helsen sails. Seems like the sailrite page might have rounded?

The best way to clear this up is to measure the dimensions yourself. None of the measurements are particularly hard to make, even with the mast up.

Good Luck.

I agree with Clark that your first step is the measure your boat yourself. I suggest that your second step is to take pictures and dimensions of the Catalina sails and sell them on eBay or similar online site. Good Catalina sails are pretty easy to sell. Then, depending on your budget, buy a set of used sails at a place like Bacons, Minney's, Atlantic Sailtraders, Sail Wharehouse or any of the numerous reputable used sail brokers. Or buy a set of new sails if you can afford them. I think it is hardly ever really worth it to cut down a larger sail to fit a smaller sailplan, unless you can do the work yourself.
