Looking for a trailer

I just purchased an ODAY 240 that didn't have a trailer. I'd like one, but the prices I've found for new trailers are in the $4000 range. Wondering if anyone has a good source for a good used trailer that will work with my boat.

It's hard to find

a used trailer after Katrina. Be very careful of a cheap new trailer as I've seen some junk out there. If you find a "good" used one, have someone you know with trailer knowledge check it out for you. Make sure your hitch is rated for towing the boat. Sometimes a person has a vehicle capable, but the hitch is not rated correctly.

Thanks.

My tow vehicle is good. I also have a travel trailer so I'm use to towing. Just need to find a trailer for the boat (and if I could figure out how to tow both the travel trailer and the boat at the same time I'd be in good shape):)

You may want to consider finding a used powerboat trailer and having it converted - bunks, keelboard, brakes, and a new bow stop. a trailer for a 24' powerboat may not have brakes, but you want them!

I've got one

I've got one I'm going to be selling in the near future if you can wait. I've got an O'day 23 that I'll be putting on E-Bay in the next month or so. I plan on selling the trailer after the boat is delivered (unless the buyer wants to purchase it as well). It's practically new. I bought it from a guy who used it for one 150 mile trip (the wheel bearing grease was still blue!). I just went to New Jersey to pick up an O'Day 25 that I purchased and it towed like a dream. Pretty much everything is adjustable, so I can't imagine you couldn't make it work for your boat. Give me you e-mail address and I'll send you some photos.

pulling multiple trailers???

if you (first) travel trailer is fifth wheel mounted than you can tow a second trailer behind it but talk to someone who does this for a living to learn how to do it correctly or you'll end up killing someone

Excuse me?

Where, exctly, cn you tow another trailer behind a 5th wheel? Certainly not in any state I have traveled in. Big rigs an do it legally here in Oregon but not regular vehicles.

Multiple trailers

I think each state has a size restriction on how long the towing vehicle and trailer(s) can be. I see the fifth wheel/power boat combo quite a bit when in Colorado/Wyoming/Nebraska area.

Regarding power boat trailers converted to sailboat trailers is bad advice if anyone tells you it can be done. The frame of the trailer is not geared or set up for a sailboat. In addition, you will need a keel tray. Never put the keel tray on the axles as I have seen the results of one such disaster. You might have to put in more frame. In most cases, most do not know what they are doing trying to convert over and I have heard or seen the end result. You simply better know what you are doing. Last year, I had one fellow looking at a Catalina 22 on a trailer. He asked for my advice on converting a power boat trailer. I told him nothing due to liability as this country has gotten too suit happy but mostly for safety. Well, his buddy who knew everything did convert a power boat trailer and half way to the lake, the trailer fell apart. Thankfully, no one was hurt or any other cars involved. Unless you know for sure about boat trailers, do not convert. As for a fifth wheel towing one boat and then to suggest towing another boat beind the travel fifth wheel trailer is suicide. I have seen one accident with one idiot doing that and he lost control very easily killing his family and himself. I knew him and told him not to do it. Don't be foolish on even thinking of pulling two boat trailers in tandem. Too much can go wrong and every state I know of does not allow it. Not many used sailboat trailers and if you find one, make sure a qualified mechanic specializing in boat trailers look it over. Brakes, bearings, racers, leaf spring and attachements, welds, metal fatique, lights, etc... are things to look at. Good luck in your search. I have been pulling boat traielrs for over 40 years and probably have more than everyone else out there. Experience just telling me.

I stand corrected

But I sure am glad Oregon doesn't allow trailers behind a 5th wheel!

MI allows it!

Randy, I have seen it quite a bit in Michigan. A pickup with a travel trailer and then a smallish boat in the 18ish foot range. Not something I think I want to do! Jack

Dave,

I'm curious - what are your feelings on the single axle trailer that the Hunter 23 was sold with? I use it, but every time I do, I feel like one axle just isn't enough and I should really convert it to a tandem...

h 23 K Whopper trailer

The KWS or Kens Welding trailer was marginal with the bearings and fenders. One axle with brakes was fine but without brakes, it could be a disaster waiting to happen as the center of gravity was too high and could cause the trailer to swing back and forth. This is dangerous as too many would hit the brakes thinking this would actually stop the trailer from swinging. Not so and the trailer would swing more. Thus the brakes on the trailer would counter react that . If pulling without brakes and the trailer started to swing, then acceralte just a little to stop that and then brake slowly. Do not tail gate but remain far behind even if other idiots cut in front of you. What I did not care about the trailer was the use of 15 inch radius wheels which raised the trailer too high. I did convert some trailers to lower fat squatty tires which helped emensly and also added brakes. Two trailers were added with a second axle. But the problem was cost and many did not want to do this. I hope this helps.
