I am looking for a trailer to buy for an Ericson 27. I'm located in Louisville, KY, but will travel to pick it up if neccesary. If I can't find a trailer specifically for this boat I could customize any trailer that will meet the load requirements (7,000# displacement)I am trying to buy a project boat, and I really don't want to spend more on the trailer than the boat. Does anyone have detailed plans for the construction of a trailer for this model? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Easier?

You might find it easier (and cheaper) to have a cradle made for the boat - then you can load it on any flatbed trailer made to handle that much weight. You could rent/borrow/buy a flatbed easier than you can find a boat trailer that will fit an E-27.

Trailer for Ericson 27

Hi Toni, I currenty own a 78 Ericson 27 with a trailer. I'm not planning on selling the trailer but if you would like I can get you some pictures for reference. Bob above has it right that most people don't realise what they are getting into trying to haul something this size. I bought my E27 in Ohio and hauled it back to Wisconsin, or should I say mile marker 44 on the Indiana toll road where the engine in my full size truck decided to melt down. The boat is trailerable for short distances with a full size 1/2 ton truck with a load leveling hitch. If you plan to go any distance you realy need to have a truck with a tow rating over 10,000lbs. My trailer also has the built in screw pads which are sweet when doing bottom paint because you can move one at a time and get the entire bottom painted. It also has a removable tail piece if you wanted to self launch, but you would need a ramp that is quite steep (need 5ft of water depth 25 ft from where water hits ramp to get boat to float) The other issue launching the boat yourself is get the mast stepped. There are some that say it is fiesable but I pay $300 in and $300 out and I belive it is worth not running the risk of trashing the mast. Lastly, the idea of being able to work on your boat in your own driveway is nice. I will say I could not have done as much restoration as I have if I had to hassle going back and forth to the marina yard to work on the boat. Since this thread only allows one picture send me your E-mail address if you would like the trailer pictures and or other pictures of the boat it's self. Good luck Doug

Rule of thumb

The guys who do it a lot say not to tow anything that weighs more than the tow vehicle itself. Sure, some guys try to tow 25' boats with their Subaru, but it is asking for big trouble - think panic stop situations, for instance. You are talking about getting a project boat, which to me means you are wanting to limit the outlay. Then you want to avoid spending too much for a trailer. Be careful, because for a boat this size, any suitable trailer will cost a significant percent of the overall total. And Doug is right - that's a lot of mast to raise/lower yourself. It can be done, but that is a substantial piece of pipe.

Trailer Pictures

Please send pictures of your trailer to pyroray@comcast.net. I used a friends trailer to bring my boat from Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands, WA to Lake Pend Orielle, Id. I would never recomend trailering without at least a 1 ton truck. I used a Ford F-350 full size pickup, the trailer brakes were fully functional or this would have never worked. A half ton truck should only be used to pull this load in a yard where speed is less than 5mph.

Sorry to all of you that were looking for me to send trailer pictures. I had a computor crash so no E-mail and no pictures either. I'm currently doing a trailer upgrade anyway so next week sometime I will get new photos and send to anyone with E-mail address above. Doug

Input on getting a E27

Berry, I could write a book on items that I have upgaded on my E27, new electrical wiring, all new plumbing both fresh and sanitary, nothing like a clean smelling head to keep the ladies happy!, pressurized water system, deck speakers that clip on the stantions, new motor mounts, cutlass bearing, running rigging, bottom paint, refinishing of cabin brightwork, new stove. I'm in year three of restoration of this boat. Things to look for, mast dimpeling by spreaders, water getting into the keel area, cabin roof, poor insulation in galley cooler, poor factory bedding of deck hardware, original wiring both 12v and 110v needing attention, poor cockpit drains, gate valves for thru hulls, etc. This is just a sample, but any boat you go looking for in 70's vintage whether made by Ericson or other will have it's share of problems. With that said, I this boat has become part of the family. My wife and I stayed out around 12 nights this summer onboard and we love it! I have also sailed the boat in 40mph winds with a reefed main and the boat took it in stride. In light winds on a couple occasions it still pulled away from a catalina 25 and a catalina 26 capri in beer can races. The boat sails better than it's PRHF rating but it is no speed demon either. Just a comfortable, easy to single hand, cruser/racer. Doug. If you want to talk in person send me an E-mail at doug.harmon@earthlink.net and I would be more than happy to give you a call and give you more input or if you would like you can drive out and look at my E27 in Lake Geveva, WI 45 minutes drive. There a 75 E27 for sale in Milwaukee that looks like one worth checking out.
