Though it seems like an odd request, I am looking for a title or paperwork on a 22’ sailboat that is totaled, junk, or been to the scrap yard. This is why, I have a 22’ sailboat and all the paperwork for it but in the town that I live a mooring is a very hard thing to come across. An acquaintance of mine has a mooring but has sold his boat and will loose the mooring unless he owns a boat to keep on it. I’m not willing to let him place my boat in his name since I do not know him that well but if he can register a similar boat and give me the mooring sticker my problems are solved and he can retain his mooring until he can afford a boat again. For those of you that have a moral issue with the please spare me the speeches. For those of you that can help I truly appreciate the help. You can email me at stevo7898@yahoo.com Thanks

Isn't "title" a State document?

I might be wrong, but I think that a boat's "title" - unless it is a documented vessel - is something controlled by the state. You'd need to look specifically for a vessel in your state and get the paperwork for it.

Looking for a title!

Steve, This list is not the place for advice on how to circumvent state or local laws. Take it elswhere, please. Jon

Spare the speeches?

You ask for help in cheating someone else out of "their place in line" in a public forum, then have the temerity to say "spare me the speeches". OK, none from me, just a comment that I hope the guy that's next in line for a mooring sees the information, and follows the events closely.

Wouldn't Surprise Me

if there were not a bunch of law enforcement and state tax people that are boaters and participate in this forum too! *yks

My family has lived in this town for three

generations. If I knock out one more powerboat that will end up in the harbor owned by some person who has a million dollar summer home in the town, I am not going to loose much sleep. In fact I'll feel pretty good about it. Also since I wrote this I have found another solution to my mooring situation so for any of those who could have helped thanks. FYI my new solution is perfectly legal! I can buy him a small boat to retain to mooring and put a T Dock that will hold two boats on the mooring.

That's the Problem

One of the problems with the "me first" attitude is that you don't know if you're knocking out a millionaire powerboater. You may be knocking out the guy that's a 4th generation resident, that has to give up his boat if he doesn't find a mooring for it soon. But even THAT'S really not the issue. So what, so you're a 3rd generation resident. Why then aren't you higher on the list than the theoretical millionaire powerboater? I'm glad though, that you found a legal alternative.

Title it yourself

You do not necessarily need the original documentation and title to gain clear title to a boat legally in your possession. I know someone who did this with a 23-footer dragged out of someone's backyard when the widow said she was done with it. He chopped down a tree growing through the outboard well to get it onto the trailer. He basically rebuilt the whole boat and when it was completed and ready for registration & insurance, he was told there was no way to register it as what it was, since it had been sold 'as-is' with no title provided (i.e., as junk). So he declared it a homebuilt boat and himself the first owner of a new boat. The HIN was not needed as it was not considered a production boat (though he kept it on the boat for historical purposes). It's not circumventing a law, since there's no way to follow the law in the case of a resurrected dead boat. Inquire with your DMV as to how to register a backyard-built boat; then do that. And forget about it. The cops will never come by to match up the model logo on your sails with what your title says it is. Jc 2
