looking looking Kelowna BC
Hello,

I'm looking for a sailboat, with head room to stand up inside. I need a sailboat that fits on a trailor...and I need the trailor!

I live in Kelowna BC and would be prepared to store the boat if it meets my requirements.

I will be sailing this boat by myself so I need one that is easy to launch and is a one person show, with room for friends to sleep over if needed. I have two Golden retriever dogs and they are my constant companions and will be on the boat as well.

I'm looking for a boat that is either newer, or very well maintained. Also interested in having someone transport the boat to Kelowna. Please contact me at MarileaSharpe@gmail.com if you have a boat and trailor that fits my needs.

Thanks!

Wow, that is a tall order! And unless you can teach the dogs to help you step the mast then probably not even possible. I can't even launch and sail my 20' centerboarder alone unless the mast is already stepped. Any trailerable boat that also has standup room would likely have a pop top. Now if you mean "dry sail" where the boat sits at or near the launch with the mast always up then you might be able to go solo. Still would not have a clue which boat to recommend. You want a "big" cruising boat but on a trailer.

In the big scheme of things you are not all that far away. I am a member of MYCBC.CA you can enter that on your location bar and go straight to our site, MacGregor Yacht Club of B.C. We mostly operate out of the greater Vancouver area and we all own some model or other of MacGregor 26 sailboat. This is precicely what you are looking for, stand up room, single hand, room for guests and two big dogs and trailerable. Vancouver is not so far from you that you require delivery, you can easily come to the coast yourself and check out a few for sale. Affordable Dream Boats is located in the Maple Ridge district, if you give them a call they may be able to get you one used or new, they are the B.C. dealership.

Is this for real? You forgot to mention the tow vehicle. Will it have to be light enough to be pulled by a 4 cylinder Dodge Dakota?

By the way you've described it, a Macgregor would be ideal for you... Although having never sailed on one i cannot comment no how easy it is to single hand or set up solo.

from what i've read about them they're fairly simple boats though, with near standing head room down below

It would help if you said what your budget is, since that will often be a limiting factor. The boat I have has 6' of headroom throughout most of the cabin and is a trailerable boat, but a fairly large trailerable boat, and probably out of your price range. One advantage it does have is a proprietary mast-raising system that allows a single person to step the mast in about 15 minutes.

I think that a Mac 26 would work for you Marilea, but you would still need a good towing vehicle. If you belong to a yacht club or have access to the water, you could always rent a towing vehicle twice a year to get it back and forth and still be ahead of the game. The new MacGregors have high free board similar the the O'Day 25s and 26s which means that getting on and off at the dock might require a portable step. My dog Penny has no problem getting in or out of my O'Day 222 from my kayak. The only head room I have on my boat is when the main companionway hatch is open and that's good enough for me. Good luck with your hunt.

Hi Marilea -

A good friend of mine has a Hunter 235. They are water ballasted and hence easy to trailer with a modest tow vehicle. They can be a little tender when sailing in heavier winds but you get used to it. And they have more headroom than my O'Day 222 and a lot of interior space. They also have a pretty good mast raising system so you could do this yourself. Finally, the stern is open and I suspect it would be easy for a pooch to get onboard. The 222 would have standing headroom if you happen to be 4.5 feet tall, but otherwise as Joe indicates you will need to crouch down a bit. It would also get crowded with a couple dogs and and friends.

I'm sure there are other options out there as well. Good luck with your search.
