Looking For a Sailboat - Suggestions?

Looking for some suggestions for our next sailboat.

We are in the market for a used 38'-41' sailboat. We have $130,000 - $155,000 in our budget and would like something that is comfortable (to keep my wife happy) and fast (keep me happy). Nothing too old and possibly built between 1999 - 2005. We will be sailing the Great Lakes with the plan of heading to warmer waters in future years during the winter months.

Got any suggestions?

Two I would consider would be the Ericson(PS) 38 or the Freedom 40/40. Both fast and very comfortable. Well made and hold their values well.

In your price range, you should be able to find many to look at.

I would look seriously at the Catalina 42. You can get the MKii in your price range. It has plenty of waterline to go fast but the two cabin layout is perfect for a cruising couple. It is something I am looking at for the future.

The draft on it would be friendly for the ditch also and bahamas friendly.

There are a ton of boats that fit what you are willing to spend. Have you searched www.yachtworld.com ?

Attend as many sailboat shows as you can and look closely at those within your criteria. Then visit as many brokers in your area and see what's on the market. It takes this kind of effort to see the differences in comfort, construction and options. Given what you've said regarding your interests, you'll probably be looking at one of the major production boat builders (rather than limited production builders or from spec'd-out construction). Give 'em all a close look, there's lots out there - new and pre-owned. Have fun and keep good notes. Then when you're ready to make the deal you have the pros and cons of each and you'll better understand the boat itself and how you'll intend to use it.

Makes a lot of sense.
