I own a 43'Hunter and the holding tank is shot. I have easy access to it, but it's diffcult to find a replacement. Ezell, the maker of the tank, doesn't have a drawing on the tank and Hunter has the wrong drawing on file. My guess is to remove the tank, make my own drawing and send that to someone who can make a tank. Do you have a good recommendation for someone who makes custom tanks.

You don't want another metal tank...

You'll just be faced with the same problem again in a few years. Plastic is the only recommended material for waste holding. Check the Ronco Plastics catalog (http://www.ronco-plastics.com)...they make top quality thick-walled plastic tanks for a very reasonable price and have more than 400 shapes and sizes to choose from, including over 100 non-rectangular. If they don't have one that'll fit, several people here have gotten custom welded plastic tanks from C.C. Tech http://www.gocctech.com/marine/boat-tank.htm I've just recently been told of another custom plastic tank mfr--Triple M Plastics http://www.triplemplastics.net/ I don't know much about 'em yet, except they've been in business 30 years, put a lifetime warranty on their tanks, and their price for a custom welded 30 gal tank was about half what I've seen quoted by C.C. Tech...which was enough for me to think their site was worth bookmarking for future reference.

Move To Victoria Canada

Soggy, You could ship the boat to Victoria Canada where there are no laws for dis-charging sewage. This is great for all the people who live in Seattle and Puget Sound. MMMMMMMM, just the thought of a nice swim in the San Juan Islands at a flood tide. If that does not make you want to move there, well the good news is that the entire city of Victoria dumps raw sewage into the Juan de Fuca Straits twice a day. No kidding, there is no sewage treatment on that island. Just a thought Soggy, RL

Of course you've been there...

And you've seen all this sewage that's supposedly floating around in Puget Sound and the San Juans? It is true that Victoria doesn't have a sewage treatment plant...it's such a small island, with such a small population (fewer than 1,000 in the winter) that it doesn't need one...mother nature is fully able to process it. What's more, mother nature's "treatment plant" doesn't dump millions of gallons of raw sewage in the water every time there's a heavy rain, either. You might want learn a bit about this subject instead just regurgitating the claptrap you've been fed by equally uninformed environmental extremists.

Just checking that you are

speaking sarcastically with respect to the population of Victoria?

Not intentionally...

I was thinking Victoria is on PEI...I should have checked my atlas. However, nature in that area is equally capable of dealing with quite adequately with the sewage from Victoria. And that was my point: There are places where nature can actually do a better job than man...but too many people have a knee jerk reaction to the idea of any raw sewage going into the water ANYwhere without any knowledge to back it up.

Hunter 42 Passage Seattle WA
Metal holding tank.

I too fell victum to Hunters aluminium holding tanks. The previous owner never used the holding tank on my 42 Passage. I know, the Y valves were so frozen that I had to replace them. About a year later, we started smelling sewage. Upon investigation, I found that Hunter had installed an aluminum holding tank. To guarentee that it would be a disaster, they screwed bronze fittings directly into the tank, Electrolysis had completely eaten the tank away at the fittings. The bigest problem was removing the tank, as Hunter had used pour foam all around it to secure it. With less than 1" clearance between the tank and the hull, it took 2 days of hard work to dig the foam out and remove the tank. I then made a drawing of the whole it sat in and had a company in Chilliwak sp? BC. I was in BC Canada at the time. They made a tank of 3/8" welded polyproplene for a very reasonable price. It has served well for years. (Note to Peggy) BC is on the west coast of Canada and a lot of boaters are starting to use holding tanks. In fact, use of a holding tank is legally required in many places in BC.

Holding tank supplier

My alu tank is still doing ok, but I am replacing me standpipe, or the pick-up pipe. The lower part of the original pipe is gone and now I'm just sucking air when I try to pump it out. There is a great tank supplier in Seattle, and I am sure they will ship it anywhere. If you want their name, let me know and I will send it to you. They sell molded plastic tank with lots and lots of different sizes and dimensions. These tanks do not have a seam anywhere. It is molded so it will never split a seam and leak. You just tell them where you want the holes or inspection ports, and they put them there. Obviously they recommend "NO" holes except on the top surface. John

Sounds like a retailer for Ronco Plastics tanks

Most likely Marine Sanitation. Ronco Plastics (no relation to the Ron Popeil Ronco) sells direct for less than any retailer. And btw, I'm aware that the B.C. Provenicial Parks anchorages are now "no discharge."

What about TODD?

How about TODD? I know they are on several marine distributor web sites and have a variety of FDA approved holding tanks. Are they good?

FDA approved black water holding tank?

I do not think that you really need an FDA approved holding tank for black water. You should either think about a high quality tank like the ones available from Ronco or other companies or have one custom made for another $100-150.

FDA approval is only needed for fresh water tanks

It hardly matters whether a sewage holding tank is approved for use around food. :) As for Todd tanks...their max wall thickness, even for their largest tanks, is only 1/4"...Ronco's MINIMUM wall thickness is close to 3/8", making for a much sturdier tank, able to support the weight of the contents without support on all sides and be pumped out without flexing or bulging. Todd tanks are only available retail in a very limited number of rectangular sizes and shapes...Ronco has more than 400 shapes and sizes, including over 100 non-rectangular. "Off the shelf" tanks all have fittings pre-installed in the same so-called "standard" locations...which may or may not put 'em where you need 'em. If they aren't, you CAN move 'em if you want to spend another $40+ for their "fitting relocation kit" and are good with a hole saw. Ronco installs fittings in the locations and sizes specified by the customer when they make the tank. I have no relationship with Ronco whatever...only firsthand knowledge of the quality and durability of their tanks because they supplied about 95% of the tanks we sold for nearly 10 years, with never a single complaint to this day.
