I have a C30 and am looking for my next boat. I would like a 36', open interior that can sail around the world. Fiberglass a must and sloop rigged. Any suggestions!

Rich, there was just a whole thread on this topic on the Beneteauoners forum last week. Go into the archives and you will see that a number of Beneteaus have been used for offshore cruising Good luck charlie

Droop

Catalina C36 MK II

Keel stepped mast, cheaper... Only draw back is the large cockpit.

Avoid the Huntalina and Frencheteau

Sabre, Tartan, Cabo Rico, Island Bucket, Valiant, Cape Dory, Wet Snail, .... Get a heavy displacement full keel and avoid those bleach bottles with masts

Rich, put 'cutter rig' on your list.

Might as well say it now, you'll learn it soon enough.

And removef "open interior" from list

since you will want to pack a lot of (whatever you ocean crossing guys pack) stuff and don't want it flying around the cabin.

Research

When you have a little more specific idea about the kind of boat you want, you may want to try posting on the Sailnet (www.sailnet.com) message board under "Buying a boat". They have more than 12,000 posts on that topic alone, along with reviews of different models and articles about and by actual cruisers. Boats you might want to consider or drop from consideration are likely to already have been discussed in some detail. (Some threads have 20 or more postings.) People who frequent that site also have some pre-set ideas about things, but many of them may actually have experience in what you seek to do.

Daryl, the Sabre, Tartan aren't heavy displacement

full keel boats. Yes, they are well built boat. I know you knew this, but for those few that might not know. And Droop, while the Catalina 36MKII does have a "larger" cockpit, that wouldn't be the number one reason I'd have w/regards to whether she's good or not for Rich's request. I think there other reasons I might look for different boats (Tankage, etc) There are many very open cockpit-open transom boats that sail around the world. Most are the bigger racing yacths. The secret is having an open transom, even if you do get the cockpit swamped the large opening of the transom help the water escape quickly.

On that note

(cockpit swamping) Does anyone know of a modern, euro-design boat, with or without a cutout transom cockpit that has taken on wave water. I mean; Substantial. I'm not talking drainage speed. (Mine's slow) But I think modern designs are rarely susceptible to the forces of breaking waves. Mine just scooted away from them. We had one wave slap the side of the hull in ten years cruising from Puget Sound to Trinidad and back to Florida. That wave put about two gallons of water in the cockpit. The seas were confused, waves to 10' and it was blowing 30-40kts and we were on a broad-reach. Again, just wondering?

Options in mid 30s range for offshore

Hi Rich - Obviously budget will be a big consideration, but boats in your size range I'd consider for offshore voyaging would be (in no particular order): Valiant Esprit 37 Wauquiez Pretorien 35, Hood 38 Baba 35 Waterline 36 Niagara 35 Crealock 34, 37 Alajuela 38 Bayfield 36 Cabo Rico 38 Caliber 35, 38 Island Packet 35, 38 Tayana 37 Amazon 37 Halberg Rassy 35, 36 Hans Christian 33,34 These boats represent very different prices and features, but I'd consider them to be solid enough to outfit for offshore voyaging. There are many others... Just my 2 cents, Trevor

Contessa 32s get an A

If your looking for a Boat that can take what the sea has to dish out, look at the Contessa 32. You can find some older boats and I hear they are starting production again!. The Contessa was designed by David Sadler and she was studied by yacht builders due to the infamous Fastnet race of '79.

New Boat (Pacific Seacraft)

Since I started this I might as well update it now and then. I like the Pacific Seacraft 37 aka. Crealock. The cheapest I found was 119K for an 87. That's a lot more expensive than my 86 C30 but reachable in 2-3 years. I will look at the Contessa this week and get an idea. Thanks everyone for the discussion....

Lottery winner take heart..

Well, someone wins every lottery eventually and I have a house that's worth twice the cost of an older (late 80's)boat. My kids are off to college and maybe the wife and I will move into a condo or a boat. Stanger things have happened.....
