Thanks for all the advice I've gotten in this forum so far, it's been EXTREMELY helpful! I'm looking to upgrade from my old Lido 14 boat to something bigger that I can use my backyard "moorage" and large enough to take on a few day sailing trips around Puget Sound. I've been monitoring Craigslist and a few other sites for a used Mac 22 or similar. I'm looking for something around 20-22 feet since that is about the limit that my Ford Ranger should handle, and backing the beast through the gate into my backyard. I've seen and emailed owners of the San Juan 21, Macgregor 22, and and Northwest 21. I kind of like the layout of the Northwest 21 since it seems to have all the things I'm looking for in a small boat. Swing keel, galley, head, and size. Anyone know anything about this boat? Here are some photos of the one that is for sale ($1,000 without trailer or motor - owner says he can get a trailer and motor for $500 each). I haven't looked at the boat. It looks like it could use a good scrubbing if nothing else. http://tinyurl.com/yjosqe Not saying I'm getting this or anything, but I like the size and layout from what is shown in the photos. I'm just kind of wondering about the rudder on this boat. It appears that it's not the swing type, would this cause any problems with launch/towing? Seems that it could get snagged or dinged some something if not careful. Any advice on what I should look for? Thanks, Tom - boat shopping newbie

Why pay money for that boat?

You can get a MUCH nicer Catalina 22 for about $2,500, probably with a trailer. The boat you display looks like the kind of problem that somebody should pay you for if you are willing to take it off their hands. It looks like the Seller doesn't want to part with the cost of disposal. Don't waste your time or money with it.

Sailboat without trailer

NEVER buy a sailboat without a trailer. I looked into it and found that it is virtually impossible to buy a trailer for most small sailboats AND if you can find one it tends to cost more than the boat. Also do not buy a sailboat without an outboard, they are very hard to find and usually do not have long enough shafts. My 1971 22' Venture came with a 1975 6 HP Evenrude with a 27" shaft and even that is none too long. Lots of boats in Southern California without trailers but most are VERY hard to sell since the slip does not go with the boat. Good luck. Novelman

not buying just comparing.... :)

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Looks kinda rough. I do like the layout of the boat, but it does look like it probably has a bunch of problems that need attention. Like I said, I didn't intend on buying that one, it's size and features were kind of what I'm looking for, but without the layer of dirt, good and whatever else is hidden there. :) Any opinions on the Lugger 21? http://www.hereintown.net/~jsiehler/Drawings/page4.html Not sure if it's the Windward or Southwind boat, I'm asking the owner for more info. I've been emailing back and forth and it seems like a well cared for boat, but I'll get more photos tonight. He says it's a fixed keel that draws about 4 feet and doesn't have ballast. Does that seem right? Seems that it should have something down there, water ballast maybe? It's the owner's step-son I've been chatting with, so he'll ask for more info. It's another one with no trailer though....Ugh. Tom

trailers

Thanks for the reply, I just saw that when I was posting my trailer comment. There seems to be a lot for sale that don't have trailers, that's a pain. I don't intend to pay any moorage and just keep it in my backyard. There are a lot more boats for sale than trailers I've noticed also. Tom

Its on a trailer!

Whats wrong with that one? Lol just checkin. never heard of that boat before but looks like a good layout, and with a little clean up a nice looking boat. Half the fun is cleaning it and making it yours! At least I think. Sounds good, dont think i'l pay more than 1750 for it all(trailer, boat, engine) And engines are nto hard to come by. I got one my self for sale localy here and there are a bunch more. So dont let that hold ya back. I take it it has a swing keel? make sure the cable is good! -Jeff H23

Newbie advice

Having just sold a Macgregor 22 (1972 model) and just bought a 1984 Hunter 20, my advice would be to look at as many boats as you can find in your area...in person before buying anything. The Northwest 21 in your link is a well built boat but heavier than a Macgregor by about 1000 lbs. I would also encourage you to buy a trailer with the boat, it will pay for itself especially when you go to sell it or just need to haul it out for maintenance. The trailer pictured doesn't look like it fits that boat correctly, maybe it's for a longer boat? I found my boat somewhat neglected and needing a good cleaning and new running rigging and such. For a few thousand dollars and a lot of sweat equity I now have a nice boat worth twice what I have spent on her. Definatly check the keel cable at the winch and make certain that it works...it's vital on a swing keel boat that the cable be replaced every few years or more often in salt water. Mostly, look for something that isn't too big that it becomes more trouble to go sailing. The smaller the boat, the more you'll go sailing. Good luck!

trailers, boats, looking.....etc.

yeah, that trailer in the photo is one that he borrowed. It's definitely not for towing that boat. I still think I really like the Mac 22, but I'm just looking at things that show up on craigslist to get ideas. I can't find much on the internet about the Northwest 21. I'd like to know the weight for sure, I'm sure with the extra stuff inside it's a bit heavier, but not sure how much. I did find that it was made in Bremerton, WA - just across the water from me, but they don't seem to be made anymore from what I've found. I really do need a trailer, and it would be a big hassle finding one if it wasn't included I would think. Seems there are so many boats out there without wheels for sale! I really don't need another $100/month added to my monthly bills, so it has to be in my yard. I do like the Mac 22 though. I guess some don't come with a galley, but it seems that there is room for one on the left side so I could build something in there. I could be wrong, and know someone will correct me! :) Tom

Another one....

Here is another boat that sounds about like what I'm seeking. http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/boa/230241483.html Although, once again there is no trailer and to complicate it slightly it has a fixed keel. I've been emailing the owner back and forth and it seems they have taken really good care of the boat. He said it didn't have any ballast in the keel, would that be a water ballasted boat possibly???
