Looking for a hand crank for a Yanmar

As a kid, we had a couple of diesel model airplane engines that we could hand crank .. less than 1 cu inch displacement.. I have tried to hand crank a 2 QM on a friend's 33, but was unable to because of crank access problems.. We thought we could get it spinning with compression released then compress one then the other cylinder as it caught. The problem was that we could not spin it because the crank was too hard to access.. An extension bar about 18 " long (to get past companionway ladder and stuff) might have put the crank in a place where it could be spun with enough "UMPH" to get it fired..

Midnight Sun origally came with a 2QM20 that I must have started with the crank handle a hundred times. I had to have an 8" extension welded to the handle so it would clear the engine compartment. Then it was simple. Push both the compression releases, spin the engine as fast as you could, then release ONE of the levers. The engine would start fine on one cylinder, then release the second. Never had to try more than twice. I now have a 3GM30F and the handcrank access is covered but could be removed. Yanmar covered the handcrank access because the handle would have to slightly deflect the waterpump belt. I have never tried it. You can indeed start the 3GM30F with almost dead batteries using the compression release levers.

Hand cranking

I used to stat my 1GM with the crank all the time..... Especially when my old batteries went bad.....the trick was to open the compression relief valve and place the throttle at about 1/4 . Then I'd spin the engine as fast as possible. Once I got it spinning I'd flip the compression relief valve closed. I'd be good for 3 or 4 tries, not many more. it would usually start on the 1st or 2nd try.

I think you might use the compression lever trick on a 2gm. But on a 3 cylinder I doubt you could get it spinning fast enough..... The crank must be for positioning the cylinders to adjust the valves.... But a wrench on main pulley nut will usually do the same thing...

Just MHO. ...

The crank also can be used to pump the fuel up and bleed the lines after replacing the Racor fuel filter that is under the floorboards in front of the engine on my boat. Saves a lot of wear on the starter, etc. as well as not having to drain your starting battery. I did successfully start it once and only once with the crank but wouldn't count on that as a back-up starter. LOL It is handy for a number of things - though I've had other boats with Yanmars that didn't have a crank and somehow managed without.

that looks right, but I have only the shaft coming out of the timing gear cover so I can't tell. my manuals and books are on the boat in sunny Louisiana and I am snowed in, in Kentucky, yuck! thank you for the picks

Re: Hand cranking

cranking motors that were equipped with hand cranks has always been one of my things if nothing else just to see if I could. I have found with motors with compression leavers fit is hard to tell what piston is on the compression stroke. if you have the leavers hooked together it dose not matter. works better for me. thank you for your input

Does anyone have a Yanmar YSM 12 hand crank that the could post pictures of? Making or buying a handle is item 325 on the bug list for my H30.
