Looking for a hand crank for a Yanmar

Hello all, I am currently looking for hand starting mechanism for a 3QM30 Yanmar. I have a working engine that runs great and is complete, except for the crank. Don't need to be out on a deep water trip without one! Any help with locating one would be greatly appeicrated.

Wildcat1:D

P.s. I need the sprockets and chain also not just the handle, though having the handle would be a plus. I pretty sure that I can build the handle.

If you don't find one, I could send pictures and measurements for mine. I suspect it would be easy to build one. It is basically a tip with angled slots that fits on the cranking shaft and a bar with two bends in it.

I have never managed to hand crank my 3QM30. Maybe my technique is lacking but when the compression is restored it is like hitting a brick wall.

John it would be great if you could post a picture and/or sketch with dimensions here on the site for all to access. I too am missing one.

I remember hand-cranking the old Lister lifeboat engines during my MED (Marine Emergency Duties) course ...it ain't easy!

Pretty sure I have the one that matches your motor but need measurements to confirm.

Incidentally - I have to tell you that I doubt you could start a 3GM with a hand crank. However, if you do then I will send you the (so far unclaimed) $1 all cash prize for having had success.

Still - the handle does permit valve adjustment, pump timing, and lift pump lever positioning so it has its uses. Just don't think emergency motor starting is among those uses.

Charles,
Thank you for the concern. I have not cranked this type of motor before but do have my experiences with next to impossible motors with hand cranks. I have cranked a 6 cyl. Lister by hand and that my friend was fun! If I do accomplish this feat I promise you will be one of the first to know.

I have what looks like the original hand crank that may have come with my 2GM. Have tried a few times - unsuccessfully - to hand crank my diesel.

I will get some pictures next weekend.

What if it back fired while you were cranking?

Everyone should also know that with very weak batteries you can try starting the cranking with compression released and then enable it once the engine is spinning. That has worked for me.

Good news!!

I was digging thru my lazzarett this morning, and found an extra crank there. I keep the one for my 1GM10 in the cabin so I know this is extra. PM me an address, and I'll send it to you.

Hand Crank....

This has always been a complex issue. There are some who will swear they never "hand-cranked." On the other hand, I have a few friends who say that in the right "emergency" nothing beats the ability to "hand crank."

I beleive the truth is some where in the middle. Let's call it the "sweet spot."

With the right equipment, enough time, careful lubrication, and attention to detail you can certainly coax even the most difficult "motor" to purr like a kitten.

....the right tool make it even easier!

IMHO

Re: Hand Crank....

I have a tiny 1GM and I've never been able to start it with the hand crank. And this is an engine that fires immediately when started normally.

I could also use a hand crank for my Yanmar 2GMF if anybody else has an extra one.

I too have a 1984 2gmf with no crank handle. Did these boats back in the day come equipped with the crank handle? Does anyone have a pic of the handle?

I was able to hand-crank my 2gm one time…. but the next day, I could not get it and had to call Sea Tow for a jump. Ed H

I had a yanmar that came with the hand crank and tried many times but i did not have enough room to do more than one rotation. I think that you need to have a motor with compression levers and a second person to work the levers. good luck

I am not sure but I think 1 gm handle is shorter than the 3 qm30 big motor, big handle small motor small handle so to speak .

I don't think a diesel motor of any size can be cranked with out compression release.

If anyone can hand crank a 3 cylinder diesel please make a video and post it on Youtube. I would like to see it. My little ysm12 one cylinder is hand crankable........but a 3 cylinder?
