I have a Hunter 380 with a yanmar 36. I would like a book to help maintain and fix the engine. Any suggestion ? I need a beginner's book cause I'm inexperienced in term of mechanics... Thanks in advance.

A few books

I bought a few books and read them cover to cover. The first is "Marine Diesel Engines" by Nigel Calder it cost about $20.00 well worth it. The other was the specific shop manual for my Yanmar 2GM 20. That cost $35.00. You will probably need both. Your yanmar service rep should be able to order one for you. Good luck Dan Illusions

Seloc Marine

Seloc Marine puts out a Yanmar Inboard 1975-1998 repair manual. You can find it online with Amazon or Barnes Noble. Search Seloc+Marine. It's a Chilton type manual so it won't be as good as the Yanmar factory or Marine Diesel Engine but it has good information and lots of illustrations. I am an auto tech with 22 years exp. so if you want to run something by me, look my e mail up in the owners directory and ask. -Douglas Miller s/v Brenda Gail

Yanmar Manual

I have the Yanmar manual that pretty straight forward with illustrations. On the front of your Yanmar, there is an identification plate that will tell you the model number and serial number. Take the model number and contact Torresson Direct for the Yanmar thru this web site. The manual is really good.

Another Good book Suggestion

In addition to the Nigel Calder book on diesel engines that Dan recommended, I heartily recommend Nigel Calders book titled, Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual, This covers a variety of other boat systems that you need to know and learn about. It also has a section on Diesel engines. It covers things like battery chargers, marine electronics, transmissions, propellers, shaft, stuffing boxes, strut, cutless bearing, rigging, plumbing and water systems, and much more. The book lists for $49.95 but on sale at West Marine sometimes. Wayne Estabrooks s/v Wind Drift

Yanmar Installation Manual

All of the manuals listed by the other replies can be of some help to you. The only good the Yanmar Service Manual serves is for experienced Yanmar mechanics. It provides all the technical specs and data bits for major repair and overhaul. You are better off to purchase the Yanmar Parts Manual for your engine. It gives exploded views of most of the engine components as well as the proper part numbers for anything that you need. The other helpful Yanmar manual is the Yanmar Installation Manual. By reading this book, you will learn more about your engine than most other owners already know. It gives helpful torque specs (like the shaft coupling bolts, most people don't even know there is a torqe spec.) and details the basic engine alignments. The manual is now in its third addition. Get the newest version. It will explain most of the engine basic operation parameters and how they apply. You can obtain the book from any reputable Yanmar dealer. The Yanmar engine is significantly different from any other marine diesel engine. If you substitute parts and set it up similar to standard diesel practices, you are doomed to lots of pain and failure.

You should have got a book w/ boat!

What year is your 380? When I bought my 1999 H310, it came with a very big engine manual. I'd ask your dealer where "your" book is!!! Steve, s/v The Odyssey....
