Bought a used H33 in Florida, we plan on bringing it North to RI this spring via the intracoastal, we have 90 days to leave FL to not pay sales tax, could be extended 90 days for $425. Can't sail from Fl until Nov 1, per my insurance. So plan is to leave Nov 1 for Georgia, and leave it there until spring.

Does anyone have a favorite marina in Georgia?

Try Golden Isles Marina in St Simons. Stayed a couple of years there. Great Place. If you want to go further north then Isle of Hope is another recommendation. Good Luck

Well

I cant think of any state that currently does NOT want some money IF you sstay over time X

And its not like there just picking on rich boat owners there is allways a battle between Flordia and NY about who gets the sunbirds money

Georgia requirements

How so, the boat will be documented and registered in Rhode Island?
I lived in GA and owned boats there for 26 years. Once upon a time people would avoid paying ad valorem (personal property) taxes on their boats by documenting 'em and using the regional USCG port of Miami as their hailing port (quite legal, btw)...for a number of years, it was just amazing how many owners of boats on Lake Lanier apparently lived in Miami! But GA got wise to it sometime in the late 80s and passed new laws requiring that all "permanently moored" vessels, whether documented or not, be registered...and once you're registered, the state knows where to send the ad valorem tax bill and how much tax to charge you. They've been known to walk the docks...and if they don't have a record of your HIN, they get it from the marina office! And they're serious about collecting, too! I've seen boats chained to the dock for deliquent taxes and even seen some go to auction. The good news--if there is any--in this is that the boat is taxed in the county in which IT "lives," not the county in which the owner lives...which can be a significant difference...and, only boats moored in GA on Jan 1 are taxable. So if it's not gonna stay in GA for a whole year, you might want to wait till Jan to move the boat. But you'd still have to register it if you stay long enough...and the only thing I can't remember after being away from GA for nearly 10 years is how long a vessel can remain in GA before it's considered "permanently moored' there...I'm thinkin' it's 3 months...but it could be longer, or shorter. You need to check on it. Documented vessels don't have to show state numbers but they do have to show the state decal.

St. Mary's is a nice marina. You do have to use the channel that is dredged to bring in subs at King's Bay and the current and a cross wind can be fun for a person that is not familar with the local area. Also visability can be a problem during the frequent thunderstorms. It is not really hazardous, but someone unfamilar with the waters would not be very happy if caught in a strong cross wind or thunderstorm. There have been many white knuckle journeys by people visiting.

What is the ad valorem tax rate in Georgia?

It varies by county.
It is hard to find information on-line but one source said it had to be there 184days, also the tax is based on 40% of assessed value, and the tax is as of Jan 1, bills are sent out in May, and it is due by December. Do I have my facts straight or does each county have different rules.

High and higher

I have done some looking on the SC & GA coast for a place to berth my sailboat for a few months. The closer a marina is to an airport with airline service and/or open ocean the more expensive it is likely to be. St. Simons, GA and Hilton Head, SC not only meet those criteria but are also upscale vacation spots. Jekyll Island, GA would be a great spot but I have no info on slip prices.

If you find a good spot or if you need free help for a couple of days for a move between ports contact me at jbkayaker aat msn ddot com. I'm retired.

Here's a way to find candidate marinas:
Go to maps.google.com and search for a town. For example Isle of Hope, GA.
Then pick the "Search Nearby" option and enter "marina".
You'll get a list of marinas and contact information.
