Looking for a daysailer

Looking to pickup a day sailer in the under $10k range.

I'm interested in something that's going to be fast yet easily singlehanded. The smaller dinghys I'm used to are very unstable at shifting winds, so would like something with a bit more beam and friendliness to a relative beginner. no bells and whistles needed; just a simple, fast, stable and reliable vessel.

I've checked out the raider 16, laser Vago and Bahia, the topper topaz, hunter 18, precision 18 and even some cats, but I'm more biased towards monohulls.

You all have any thoughts?

I would look at the MacGregor 26D and C models. They would fit in your want list.

Thanks for the feedback. I do know those boats, but that's closer to my current cruiser than I'd like. What I'm really interested in is something small to fly around in at my summer work location, which keeps me away from my boat and the ocean for months at a time. It's a small inland lake that's got great wind. Maby 15 feet or less..

If you haven't sailed a small cat, like a Hobie 18, you might want to give it a try before x'ing them off your list.
It's like hopping on a crotch rocket motorcycle after driving the family station wagon. Easy to rig, tow and single hand.

I use to be a dealer and sold hunter, catalina, precision, compact and others over the years. I am retired now but do know daysailors well. I will be glad to call and give you some honest imput and then you can go from there. send me a phone number and time to call and I will call on my nickle and give you some good advice.

That's very kind of you to offer your time. I'm heading to Annapolis in October and will be checking out whats to offer first hand.

I use to display the daysailors for years in Annapolis but many of them are not shown anymore as the cost of the space has gotten pricey.

Generally, Backyard Boats goes to Annapolis with Hobie and Precision. Look at the Precision 15 as it is designed with alot of room for a daysailor and a high back seat rest plus the boom is high.

The smaller Hunters I am not sure if they will be there as they have not been there is several years. The 15 and 18 are fiberglass, not plastic and too well built. Same pretty much like the Precision 15 but the 18 is bigger in cockpit.

The Capri 14.5 is small in cockpit size with a lower backseat rest. The 16.5 is bigger in cockpit room but bacseat rest is lower as well.

If you want a catamaran, for a small lake that might not be the thing you want as it is designed for use for younger generations. Some the mast can be difficult raising if you are considering the older boats. As for the others mentioned, you can raise the mast.

Be very careful when looking on Craigs list as phootos can be decieving. If you know the person, that is a differnt story. When I was a dealer, I saw too much junk which is why I sold many new daysailors but sometimes you will find sweet heart deales on that site but do look at them.

That's great info, much appreciated.

A friend recommended a raider 18, laser Bahia or a topaz. Any thoughts on these models?

How high is the freeboard and cockpit size. Cannot help you there on those as I would need to look at them.
Also, determine the length of usage if into the fall as you would not want a wet water boat and if older, you may want to consider cockpit size for comfort and high backseat rest for your back.

look at an O'day daysailer-17 ft, 6' beam, fast and fun but also a stable family/learning boat. very active class, popular for racing, $3k for a really great condition racer, less depending on condition and equipment

Are you going to trailer it or keep it in a slip (or mooring)?

If you're going to trailer, that would eliminate many of the boats already mentioned, unless you're a masochist.

The quality of the launch ramp is also going to be a factor.

Do you care if there's room for a porta-potti? Also, do you want to power it with a small outboard?

Be good to have this info to narrow it down a little.

Something I can drag onto a beach easily or put at a slip.
I would love a monohull that's easily singlehanded and have stability when the wind dies down. The laser I've normally been on is the opposite of light wind stability.
I would also like to have something with a jib and a self bailing cockpit. Under 10k is a must.
Engine, head or any other items are unnecessary. Simplicity is what I'm looking for.
