Looking at purchasing a 30 ft Catalina and need to find a slip. We are looking in the area of Portsmouth, Norfolk, Virginia Beach area. We are new to this area so any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you!

Doris, You shouldn't have any problem

finding a slip down there look also at Hampton, Newport News almost any place where the map has a lot of yellow showing. Try the Elizabeth river area.

Little Creek

I stayed at 'Little Creek Marina' one summer and it was nice. It's at the bottom of the bay, (first cut to the West coming North over/under the Southern bridge/tunnel coming from Vir Beach. Seal Team 5 is there but they are no trouble. This gives you the bay and the N Atlantic to sail.

Isn't there a big issue on prop tax?

between Portsmith, Norfolk, etc.? I think Portsmith charges big $$$. Check the archives here, as it has been discussed. Locall it has been a cotentious issue in the past.

We're in Norfolk

Hi Doris - we have our cat at Willoughby Harbor, but we were restricted to cat sized opportunities. You'll have lots more to consider. I can't remember the names of the places right in Portsmouth, but there are a couple. I do know that Bluewater in Hampton has capped the % of sailboats they lease to - turns out we don't spend enough $$ on gas and - get this - we like to change our own oil. Recommend you not get too deep down the 'Lizbeth river unless you plan on sailing a lot down the ditch > closer to the Bay is closer to the good sailing, IMHO. Willoughby Horbor is adequate for us, but it's no garden spot. The facilities are spartan, but we have the benefit of highway noise and the beautiful view of the Naval base. Property taxes are essentially the same between the Tidewater cities and are all very low. This was a wash for our selection. Dave S/V Pas de Deux, Catana 471-44

Suggest...

staying in NORFOLK or Hampton...as Portsmouth has recently re-instituted heavy personal property taxes and you will pay them annually. May I suggest Salt Pond's Marina on the bay in Hampton is a good choice or one of the marinas in Little Creek as both of these locations will let you get on the BAY without hours of motoring or sailing in the shipping channels in the harbor.
