Hi again,

Been awhile but im still looking for a cheap boat, found a few but some were so far gone they need to be scraped or they would be sold out from under me, im on the trail of another one, i got no details other than the dude wants it out of his yard it and has all the riggings, looks like a diamond in the rough to me, just need to find out if it has a full cabin for multi day sailing trips. Should be talking to the guy tmmrw so ill post more details so i can get some guidance on this one.

Glad to be back on the fourms everyone:)

Come up to the UP and buy my international folkboat. Has a trailer and nice motor, sound boat. Guess it depends on what you mean by "cheap" :D

Cheap boats usually cost more than good boats. There is a reason that they are cheap. It is usually that they cost too much to fix!

But it is your money!

Deals are out there. I sold my Oday 28 with the help of this site. Surveyed in Very Good condition with new sails, roller furling, bimini, new head and hoses. 2 yr old GPS with sounder. All for the amazing low price of $5k.
Look around here. Make sure you add up the cost of a fixer upper, then multiply by 2.

I agree with the foregoing. After 8 boats, buying a good boat for a higher price is usually cheaper. Also, it cost more to make a boat cosmetically good than to repair most problems.

Free Boat

I've said this a few times before but in my experience buying and selling boat (I've owned a bunch), when buying a traileralble sailboat that is older than 1990, the boat is free. What you are actually buying is the trailer, sails, OB and axillary equipment. Fiberglass is easy to fix, clean and paint so don't be put off by an ugly dirty boat.

But that other stuff will run you into real $$$$$$. If you don't take the attitude that you are buying the sails, O.B etc. your sweet deal will cost you a fortune before you are happy with it.

For example, Just try and find a new trailer for a sailboat for less than $3K. Likewise for a decent 4-stroke O.B. And a new set of sails can also set you back $3K.

On the other hand it is not uncommon to find a sailboat on a trailer with a servicable O.B. and an owner who has kept the sails inside for the last 10 years. If you are lucky the boat has been left parked under a tree and looks like total hell. You buy the entire package for $1K, spend two weekends with a pressure washer and some paint and you are golden. You might need to spend another $2K on "stuff" but in the end you have a nice, comfortable, sailable sailboat.

I'm with RG. Even goes for bigger than trailerable boats. New motor/trans on a bigger inboard powered boat can be $10 k if you hire it done. New 155 genoa can be 6 or $7 k, and you cannot do that yourself.
