I made a post 10 days ago. I'm looking for a second-hand boat for TransAtlantic sail maybe even around world. The yacht should be made for single handed sail, better a racing boat. I can refit an old one! Equipments are not important. Anyone has any leads, please help. The boat has to be ready before March next year. Thank you!!!!

Let me get this

Your planning to sail across the Atlatic in March and you have never sailed before? Is that right? I have no dought it is possible. Although you might want to wait until around June. The question is not if a boat can make the trip, the question is if YOU can. There's a book you can buy called 25 small boats that will take you anywhere. The Albin Vega is in that book. You can find them for a little as $5,000.00. Seaworthy bare bones boat. Like I said the boat can make it, the question is can you.

Serious reply only please

It's not me who's going to sail. It's for a friend. He already sailed single handed for about 28000 miles. I'm helping him out because he doesn't speak very good English.

Try to find a sturdy used Wharram catamaran

The most affordable and widely available sailing vessels proven capable of crossing oceans may well be Wharram catamarans. The link below should get you to a British site where used Wharrams are being offered, many of these located in other countries. Good luck Flying Dutchman

Couple of suggestions

Cape Dory, Folkboat, Dana 24, Bristol, Albin Vega Choey Lee. These are heavy displacement smaller boats that will carry a good supply of stores, but will be a bit slow. If he wants something fast, but again on the smaller side, try a Hobie 33, Olsen 30 or Santa Cruz 27. RD

Thank you! we are looking for a bigger one

We are looking for a quick boat from 45ft to 53ft long (13meters to 16 meters). suitable for single handed sailing. We have a factory here can refit the boat.

How Big

For single handing your friend will find that anything much over 40 feet will require too much effort. Raising and sheeting sails and the general requirements of large gear will be a backbreaker in too big a boat. If he uses powered winches etc. he will be running the engine several hours per day to keep the battery levels up. I am refitting a Newport 41 for single handing but I would not go any bigger than 45 feet LOA.

Why 45-53 feet?

Obviously a single hander doesn't need that much room, and the added size creates handling problems. Why does your friend want a boat that big? Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust H37.5

Sail calculator

There is a sail calculator on the web a google search will provide the site. You can put in the required numbers and it will generate a list of boats that meet your numbers. Then go to yachtworld.com and search for available boats. With yachtworld.com you can specify the most important number(for me) the price. That's what we did. When the numbers and locations had narrowed the list to about 10 boats we started driving to marinas. Some boats that looked real good on paper just didn't work in real life. The Cape Dory 30 for example. They were fine boats but I couldn't sleep in any of the berths.

Link to 2004 Singlehanded Transpac Race

This may give you some idea, but note there are not many as large as you have suggested.

I still think you need a

Catalina 22! Just make sure you get one with a fixed keel!

Very useful advice, THX

Thank you so much! I'll send your advice to my friend. Actually we are in Asia. It's only the beginning of this kind of sport here. But already we are aiming at the world.

You say you have a factory there...

...to refit the boat? How did you plan to get the boat to your factory somewhere in Asia for the refit. My friend, there are thousands of boats for sale that will satisfy your vague request. I suggest a google search.

We'll get it shipped here

Is it true that a bigger boat is safer and quicker? How can I find information about single-handed racing boats? Thank you!

go to google.com.

type in: "single handed racing yachts" or try "Pacific Single Handed Sailing Association." If you have libraries in your country... you'll find books on your subject there.

Experience Ocean Crosser

I recall that Derrick Hatfield's around World Solo yacht was for sale last summer. Not sure of it's current status. Try Wiggers Custom Yachts Bowmanville Ontario

Catalina 22 Not Entirely Out of the Question

I was just reading about a guy who sailed a Cal 20 from San Francisco to Kauai.
