Sum,

Can you do that without the serial to usb converter finally?

Jeff

I have 3 of the 76's and... .... have used them for all navigation along with OpenCPN on the ship's computer but you could use them for the lat./log. only. I've picked up a couple for under $50 off ebay that look like they were never used so a cheap solution plus they could still be used for navigation if needed and they also have the tides on them if that would ever be needed, Sumner ======================================== 1300 miles to The Bahamas and Back in the Mac Endeavour 37 Mods... The motherboard...

... I picked out for the ship's computer has two serial ports and you can add more to it if you want so I have a serial cable from it to the 76S all the time. That way I can change the route and its waypoints in seconds if I want and did that a few times on the last trip when I didn't get as far as I wanted in a day and had to quickly plot a course into a different anchorage.

If one doesn't have serial ports then yes a USB/Serial converter is needed but that isn't a big deal. I carry them just in case the ship's computer went down and I had to switch to the laptop or netbook.

I hope in this next year to make a new computer and retire the old one as I can get a faster processor now on a motherboard with serial ports that would use the same or less amps as the current one,
